This type of noise is usually associated with a loose crank arm. At this point, it probably isn't loose enought for you to feel by wiggling it, but its loose enough that when you put the force of your leg on it, it 'creaks'.

You should take it to a shop, they need to remove the crank arm, clean it, lube it, and bolt it back on with the proper torque setting. You need special tools for this, and they will be more expensive than having a shop fix it.

This is not your chain unless you mean a squeak. Under-lubed drivetrains squeak. Metal on metal movement creates a creak. If this is near your crank on the drive side, the creaking more than likely a loose or moving bottom bracket cup, crank arm, or chainring. Visually inspect everything and see if it obvious. However, repairs in this region are often best left to pros.

it might sound like it is coming from the left side near the pedals, but when does it happen? under a heavy load like when you stand? is this a road bike or MTB?

it could also be the spokes need to be checked for tension

might have to take it to your local bike shop to be sure

you more than likely over tightned your crank arms. which will cuase you to bust your crank bearings. so i would loosen the crank arms in small incraments, but not to loose you dont want to start riding and your crank arm falss off. or your bearings are allready busted and need replacing.

Replace your bike chain, it's too rusty perhaps
