do not smoke in public places: especially in their parks and gardens ( they have smoking place in each)
do not smoke on Great Wall ( there is a place for smoking)
never throw a cigarette on the ground
most of coffee shops are non-smoking!
bargain as much as possible, they will not respect you if you don't
do not give money to people singing in their parks: they do it because they like it, they are not begging. they find it very offending
when you do not want more tea you turn your glass(pot) upside down, otherwise they keep filling it
learn how to say 'ice' as they serve soft drinks and even beer at room temperature
do not try to take something from your hotel for a souvenir( if you must, do it from the first day); they will stop you when leaving and ask to return it or pay for it
ask twice for everything to be explained ( they speak basic English); they will say yes,of course without understanding
it is a great place to visit !

what a great question. I went to main land china in 1983 for 30 days. At that time people like in Kunming were very different from those in Beijing. I don`t know where you are going. Be friendly but not overly friendly....dress modestly at all times this is very important. Never say that something is cheap you may say its inexpensive.
You are there to experience them not for them to experience you. Learn to see who has a smile on their face that does not come from the heart. China is full of smells enjoy them all its really a beautiful country with over 1/4 of the worlds population. You try and figure out where they really live. ...You will only be taken and shown what they want you to see. So keep your eyes wondering into different places when you can try and see the other China they don`t want you to see. Have a great time. Some day I mighty go back for a visit.

do not touch a member of the opposite sex in public, this is bad manners. being intoxicated in front of people that do not know you well is also bad manners. carry toilet paper with you as public restrooms do NOT provide it. the chinese are a modest ,and friendly people. preaching religion in public is illegal.[china is an aethiest state] follow these guidlines and you will be alright. have a great trip.

Don't not quote the words of Sun Zhong Shan , who once said during a walk-about in the provinces when asked about the local tribes people "......fluck 'em, let 'em eat lice." Annoys them to hell.

If you are from the West (USA or UK) be prepared for the different way they use the toilet. "Sit down" toilets are almost impossible to find in the countryside.
Take in as much of China as you can! It is incredible! :)

Good advise when travelling to any country is to be polite and never get aggressive. Do that and you will most likely be fine.
