Balls aside - I use to be atheist but as I get older I'm leaning to Agnostic. I figure hey, the world can't be this screwed up with out something 'good' in the end and if I choose one religion and am wrong. Just think about it, you become a Christian and when you die you are met by a real pissed off cow because the Hindus were right - go figure.
Plus when you tell the Churchie people you are atheist they try to save your soul - you tell them you are Agnostic and they just look at you funny. or my fave, I'm a Jesuit Jew for Jesus. (JJJ)

I'm not interested in your 99 virgins, however I'm still gonna try to answer your question.
I think it takes just as many balls to be both. I am a Christian. I'm a Southern Baptist to be exact. And in today's world it's hard to truly believe in anything anymore, with out having to deal with judgment from other people. I believe in God and Jesus Christ. I was born into a family that has strong Christian beliefs, everyone may not agree with my views, but that's o-kay. I can't tell anyone that what they believe is wrong, just like no would could convince me that my God is not real.
We are all entitled to our own beliefs, there will always be someone out in the world that has bad feelings about what others think. It's just up up you as an individual to keep your faith alive, and not to let others influence you into believing something other than that.

It doesn't tale much to answer this question. It's quite easy to answer actually.
It's the Atheist, because they have to go through life thinking that they know something that they could not possibly know, nd then try to act like they know. So they are ignorant and acting like they are right about God when they really have no idea whosoever. Unscientifically that get to that point. They have intellectually lobotomized themselves and then act as if they are having common sense. That could be described as 'having ball', but in reality it's just that they decided to stop thinking with a part of their brain. It's quite amusing at times.

In the U.S. it takes more to be an atheist. That is a no brainer, a country where 87% claim to be Christian, not to mention the other percentage points for other religions, what does that leave about 3% Atheist? Polls have been done that show atheist to be the most hated group of people in the country. Polls were done asking people if candidates for their own political parties were women, black, gay, Muslim, and Atheist among other groups would you vote for them? And atheist was the only group of people that could not get a majority of their own political party to vote for them.

In America today, being a person of faith is to follow the crowd. It's not the straight and narrow any longer, it's the well trod road of the masses. Check your polls. Something like 90% say they're some faith, 82% identify as Christian. Whatever it means to identify as Christian on a poll, it sure doesn't imply independent thinking. Not inherently, anyway.

It really depends on the ideological surroundings of the individual. "Balls" is a (rather crass) reference to personal courage, and the ability to defend one's dignity under a hostile attack. Therefore, the only way to test such, is to put the person into a hostile situation, and see how they behave.
Believer or unbeliever, it doesn't really matter at that point. How each person reacts to hostility is the test of "balls". Will they run and hide, fight back, or stand their ground? Understand, each reaction may be considered the wise decision at the time!
An athiest surrounded by other athiests faces NO challenge in his beliefs. Likewise the Buddhist/Christian/Jew/Moslem/Wiccan, surrounded by their own ideological kind, feels no threat.
Challenge a person, and you will find out what they are made of. Ask him, and you may learn what he believes.

An agnostic, but I think it takes about the same size stones to be an athiest or a person of faith.
Its a matter of personal conviction that takes a certain amount of "balls" to stick with .
As for the virgins, no thanks....If they made it to heaven without giving it up, gotta be ...uuuuuugly

Well, seeing as I don't believe in heaven, the deal's kind of void.
That aside, I think it takes more, as you put it, balls, to be neither an atheist, or a person of faith.
Let's face it, the two above mentioned groups have their own little rationales - explanations for their belief systems, explanations for Everything.
They can, and do trot them out, at a moment's notice.
But I'm not one of them.
I don't have a slick, easily recited 'version of events'.
You might say I fly by the seat of my pants.
I reckon it takes more courage to face the challenges of life without a fancy pre fabricated excuse, be it 'Goddidit', or 'science has an explanation', personally, but that's just my opinion.

Let's do this analytically.
What is the most powerful nation in the world? The United States.
What is the dominant belief system there? Belief in God.
What is the minority belief system there? Atheism.
Which belief system, if professed, will ruin your political career? Atheism.
It takes a lot more balls to tell everyone else that they are crazy than it does to follow the sheep.

Both. Hard to say.
Atheism seems to be more accepted as far as an "intelligent" decision... Religious people are often pigeonholed as being stupid and not able to think. Also, people don't get passionate about being atheists - I guess I'd have to say being religious takes more balls, cause they have to deal with more.
PS--I'm in the "no god" club.
