It's not the Chinese, it's the Chinese GOVERNMENT. Very different concept there. The Chinese government doesn't like the Dalai Lama because he wants to separate Tibet from PRC. Now the PRC doesn't like to give anything up, like Taiwan (i'll support the independence of Taiwan if they have the balls to actually declare it). Also, the army around Tibet shoot little kids for target practices, the PRC doesn't want that to be known. Now before anyone gets their panties up in a bunch on how I hate the PRC, which I don't, or I'm a traitor to the Chinese people, which I'm not. There was news on CCTV a couple of months to a year ago that had that article. I don't have that article on hand but it's searchable.
The Dalai Lama is world-renowned, so he has a pull on media coverage, which the communist government of PRC don't like. Especially if you talk bad about them. Somethings are overexaggerated, the PRC is not pure evil, just pure communist.

For most of his life, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has insisted that Tibet is a separate nation and not a part of China. China invaded Tibet and took it over in 1949. As both the political and religious leader of Tibet, the Dalai represents a free Tibet, both governmentally and religiously. While in the last few years, His Holiness has backed of complete independence of Tibet, he still wants a Tibet where Tibetan can worship their Buddhist faith freely. The Communist regime cannot stand the thought of this. They do whatever they can to destroy Tibetan culture becuase they see it as a threat to their ability to hold on and keep Tibet as a part of China.
Actually, Tibet and China have gotten along for most of their history. It is just since 1949 when the Communist invaded that there has been hostility. The Communist forbid the Tibetans to worship as they wish. Many Buddhist monks have been sent to prison and around 6000 buddhist temples have been destroyed. The remaining temples are run more like state museums rather than places of worship. The Communist have been brutal in their treatment of Tibet, yet American think nothing of buying Chinese products. Everyone should boycott things from China and the Chinese Olympics.

The Chinese like comformity and thinking within a box, the Dalai Lama represents everything the Chinese dont like, they fear him because he represents non-conformity and free thinking, they dont want him to contaminate the thoughts of the Chinese people, so they start questioning thier Goverment, and taking over Tibet makes the Chinese stronger..... The Buddhists and the Dalai Lama, practice non-violence, acceptance and peace.... They do not force their religion on anyone.... They are lovely happy people !

He is the spiritual leader (and lays claim as the political leader) of Tibet, which was seized and annexed by China. To many Tibetans, the Lama represents their hope for being an independent nation once again. The Chinese see Tibetan Buddhims as a big threat to their control of Tibet and have murdered thousands of Buddist monks in order to crush opposition.

The Dalai Lama is the non secular chief and hence unifying image for the individuals of Tibet. The chinese favor administration of Tibet. how you may benefit administration of people is to wreck their sense of team spirit (divide and triumph over).

He is interfering with their political agenda because basically he likes people and China doesn't. The funny thing is though, is that all China can do is sit on their thumbs and wait until he dies. He's so much of a political hero that they can't exactly arrest him or anything.
And as for the comment asking what has he done, here's an example: he wrote a one page letter asking KFC to nicely stop butchering animals in a mostly vegetarian Tibet, and they actually listened to him and called off their corporate marching.

I wish you would tell us more of this story. They have been after him for Centuries? Add details please. I do know that the Chinese claim that Tibet was part of China. I don't know if that is true or if that was part of the propaganda they spread before invading.
I know that he fled their occupation and to have him would make the people easier to subdue. Now he speaks against their aggression so they don't like that.
