I am in the Marine Corps DEP. I leave June 25th. My recruiter says it will be open in about a year. I don't want to jepordize my leave date that much. Any comments are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Why do you want to get out of INTEL? They promote faster and jobs after you get out are a lot more plentiful with the security clearance.
I can tell you that with the shortage of those in the INTEL field they have right now the chances of them letting you switch is slim.

Your recruiter is correct. If the program is full, it is full. If you want it badly enough you can wait and you may be able to get the program later but you can only stay in DEP for up to one year total. If it doesn't open up by then you will be dropped out of DEP and have to reapply and go through the whole process all over again. Other than that you will have to serve at least 2 years in your intel MOS before you can ask to cross rate into MP.

If the quota is full you cannot switch; however, you can request to see the recruiting Company Commander or First Sergeant and plead your case. They can try (operative word is try) to get an exception.

Have you thought about going infantry? If you are going MP in the mistaken notion that State and Local Police like having MPs apply for police jobs forget it. The Police personnel managers I have talked to want fit fast thinking individuals that THEY can train in their own methodologies. MP's tend to come with baggage that local Police do not want.

ADD: Recruiters are rewarded by the quality of the people they enlist (Senior "A" Grad "A" etc...) and the number of the people they enlist not by the MOS people choose. Recruiters do not even talk MOS that is the job of the guidance councilor at the MEPS.

Then do not deliver unit the spot opens. Infantry men oftentimes do 4 yrs of lively provider so interior of a pair of days to weeks, a gap will open up. Few Marines stay in the infantry longer than 4 yrs formerly getting out on IRR or changing mos.

if it is full, its full and you can do nothing about it, save getting out of DEP and trying to get back in later.. but that is not recommended, because they will see that you failed to ship once already and be worried that will do so again. You can onl;ybe in DEP a total of 12 months. so decide now.. which do you want more.. Being a Marine, or being an MP.

It is possible that whatever you joined gives the recruiter more credit on his quota to enlist for this quarter and he does not want you to change to a MP. It is more work for him as well but it is also possible that the MOS for MPs are full and there is nothing to be done. If it is the training you are looking for you might ask another service like the SP for Air Force etc. If you let him know you are looking else where he wouldn't let you go because of paperwork, remember you aren't in the Army until you raise your hand for active duty you can change until then.

I would stay in Intel MOS. The training you receive will help you after you get out of the Army.

The intel field will help develop your communication skills, thinking and analysis skills. If you cannot communicate and think what the evidence is telling you then you will remain as part of the crowd, but if you can demonstrate that you can analyze data and communicate it to your superiors.

Wile you are in the Army takes advantage of the education opportunities and knock out all the college classes that you can take law enforcement classes.

The problem with most police officers are that they do not think or evern try to communicate to the public. Example they see you speeding and they do not even bother to determine why or want to listen that you where not. They have a quota and need to fill it. Good cops can analyze data and communicate their ideas.

Here's a clue, you don't have a job except Infantry.

The USMC doesn't guarantee a job. If you have something signed by someone, you better make sure that it's a on an OFFICIAL form, not some letter typed up.
