Whatever you can afford. There are a lot of nice things you can get that are $20 and less.

A small rememberance would be OK, $10 or $20. I guess go higher if there is a party involved. But I would think $25 would be a limit, this is a gradeschool child.
Again with the "in my day", but in my day, there was no gift giving, no party. We got a nice outfit to wear from the parents, went to church, took communion, got a gift Bible from the church, that was our gift. Got nothing, no presents from anyone, and neither did the rest of my class. It just was not done.

We attended a first communion yesterday!

Since a communion is not a wedding, where you try to pay for the cost of the dinner, etc., consider a monetary gift that will fit your budget.

If the parents can afford to have a party for the communicant, that is their gift. You don't need to worry about covering the cost of the food, drink, band, etc.

We gave $25, since I am one of the poor cousins, but the little boy will get to keep it all anyway! He doesn't split it with his wife or his father who paid for the party.
