You know I was wondering this last night, just from the opposite spectrum. I was wondering when the chips were really down and there was no where left to turn, what do the atheists do. I thought about asking on here but was afraid I would get slammed and treated as if it were meant as a put down when I was just wondering.
But in answer to your question, I think we need to know that there is something out there something beyond the natural world, a place we can go when there is nowhere else. I think we believe in the concept of heaven because it makes easier to accept death, not just of ourselves but of our loved ones as well, probably more particularly our loved ones. It is just more pleasant to think of them being a in nice place on the other side than in the cold ground where the worms crawl in and the worms crawl out as the song goes.
Don't know if you are an atheist or not, but if you are, would you mind answering my question?
Thank you for your answer. Good luck in your search for truth.

I feel like that because I'm still disgusted that I let it become a part of who I was, and now that it's no longer something I follow, I feel different. I'm pretty sure it will wear off after some time.

I don't know anyone like that. The freedom from oppression and the ability to make your own decisions and life choices is wonderful why pollute it with rigid dogmas and bad toupee wearing pastors.

Because our spirits were with God before we were born.If a person doesnt have a relationship with God on earth, they will try to fill the void by other means.Whether it be drugs, possessions, sex, money, and on and on.

i think they feel like they are giving up a part of their spirit. this hope that some part of us is eternal and we will see those we love in the after-life. religion gives you that hope if you believe it. science can do that to but religion is better at feeding of those "ego" desires.

I suspect it may have to do with the way they were raised or with the "god gene". Personally, I don't feel a lack or emptiness.

Who feels like that? Do you? We should talk. I haven't been to church in 20 years and I feel very content.
