Both the elderly (who might have senility and/ or the 'respect your elders' argument on their side) as well as middle-aged communities seem to be just as rude, in some quarters, as the younger generation- anyone else found this?

Yeah. I'm old - well, chronologically anyway, - and some of us can be 'orrible. We just do it in a different way.
There's good and bad in all generations and across the sexes.
Smile and ignore 'em. That's what I try to do.

Yes I have, although I think people are rude in every generation. I don't know whether some people reach a certain age and think that they can get away with it easier or whether they just start to not give a damn. I think some people are shocked by the rudeness of older people as they think at that age they should know better. Often rudeness in older people is often just laughed off, but I don't think the reaction to a rude youngster would be the same. I do think that rudeness is an increasing problem, my parents taught me it was out or order to be rude to anyone and I have always tried to show people respect. Of course people should only expect respect when they are respectful to others too. It really has to be earned!

God, yes.

A few years ago I was staying in a B&B in the west of Ireland, and was trying to have a late afternoon nap as it was very hot. There were these people outside the door of the house calling and hallooing and talking about how they were 'friends' with the B&B owners, who happened to be out at the time. Then these people outside (2 middle-aged and one man in his seventies) discovered that the front door was not locked, so they decided to come in anyway .... and they were going through the house doing the 'halloo' thing, and basically disturbing everyone who was there. They started coming up the stairs and I just saw red. I jumped out of bed and roared out onto the landing and started giving out stink to them, saying who did they think they were, just walking into someone else's house like this, and making all this noise when people weren't feeling well, had they no respect for people's privacy and private property ... the old guy got all uppity on me and said 'I'm seventy-three, I don't deserve to be treated like this' to which I answered 'Get OUT, you scrounger!'

The three of them left, I returned muttering to my bed, and when the B&B owners came back my husband and I told them what had happened. Coincidentally they met the intruders later and their reactions were individually interesting. The two middle-aged people were 'I don't want to talk about it' and 'I don't like that girl very much' respectively - hallo, they walked into someone's house uninvited, which suggests a blatant lack of respect - and the old man refused to comment. Apparently he just glowered. It shows that jerks come in all ages and sizes.

That's one of my pet peeves. OAPs who assume that anyone under the age of 18 is just interested in causing trouble. Lots of other people do too, but pensioners seem to feel entitled to get more uppity about it.

The thing is, the kids get treated like they're bad regardless of their actual behaviour. So guess what, after long enough, they start acting up. May as well have the fun, when they're getting the blame and condemnation anyway.

Yes! I have found that more often than not elderly people are rude and inconsiderate. Ok, they have suffered 2 wars and years of rasioning but thats only down to the time in which they grew up!... no need to take it out on the rest of the world!

Yeah my boyfriends mother..the embodiment of hell rolled into wrinkly stockings and frilly blouses!
I have to say regardless of the fact I was brought up to respect my elders and have always done so, she bites the biscuit big time, I have never known anyone to be more argumentative, sarcastic and self righteous than this woman..
She'd test the patience of a saint...

Yes as a matter of fact, I have.. I work in a cell-phone shop and you won't believe the attitudes of some of the people who come in here, the elderly included.

Yes I am in my 50s and some old age pensioners do act as if they have right of way in a lot of things, but this happens in all age groups

this happens. youngsters do not realise the reality the elders have realised by now. this is reflected in every action of youngsters which elders are observing. that gives a kick to be rude.
