Take the 3 or 4 to Altantic Avenue, change for the R train to 86thst St/4th Avenue (note: If an N comes in on the express track take that to 59th St and wait for the R there - there is a decent chance that you will pass one).

If you tried to go by bus it would take too many transfers and more time than if you go by subway
