The Dangers of Religion

Not only do religious people waste their time in devotion to cruel and non-existing gods, they also represent a dangerous system of thought.

The dangers come from the fact that religion can make people absolutely certain that they are in possession of divine and infallible truth, and that this allows them to do whatever they like to anyone who doesn’t do what their interpretation of the religion demands. As Voltaire succinctly put it: “Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.”

History has shown us one example after another of the atrocities of religion. The Christian crusades led to numerous wars and the massacre of hundreds of thousands of innocent people. The witch trials exemplify how badly the juridical system can be perverted by religion, and tens of thousands of people were executed without any possibility of defending themselves against the baseless accusations, and many were tortured during their trials.

Today we see how religious fanatics blow themselves and innocent children up, and fill their pockets with nails, so that the explosions can maim even more people.

Furthermore religion have time and again been used to oppress people and force them to abide by dehumanizing rules, and it stops free thought dead in its tracks, which makes it even easier to prevent people from improving their lot and question their dictators.

All of these things make me so angry, that I struggle to put it into words. How dare such people presume to make themselves lords of their neighbours, based on a book filled with blessings of violence, rape and war written by primitive people millennia ago?

Religion can also be physically dangerous to the believers. Blood transfusions, for example, are not allowed by some religions and some, such as the members of the Christian sect called Christian Science, turn to prayer instead of doctors and medicine.

Furthermore religion can also give people reasons for not helping others. The Karmic Law for instance basically leads to the conclusion, that if you have an illness or is born with a defect, then it’s your own fault – and is caused by something you did in this or another life. This is, in my opinion, a detestable point of view.

simple answer, 57 countries are almost 90% with muslim population 40% of whole worlds population are muslims ( more than 2.4 Billions) and if this huge populaton is drove against wall there should be a little resistance of same magnitude. Each year+/- 100,000 Muslims are being killed and if these all r terrorists then how come you r staying safe at your home and discussing this question.Islam only teaches to fight oppressor, cruel and attacker never to kill innocents .This all is a planned propaganda and war to keep muslims ignorant , use muslim mineral resources and sell costly arms manufactured by oppressors .Dont listen to media only meet muslims u will know how ignorant u have been kept.
there r truths but there are real truths also .what eyes see is not always the truth sometime that is mere allusion or mismerised view .

I'm not so sure Islam can claim this distinction just yet, although it's well on the way.

If you look at the big picture with a historical perspective, the Crusades produced wave after wave of terror again Muslims, which they resent this day. Imagine the terror people felt in Spain during the Inquisition. All one had to do was denounce someone as a "Jew" and at the very minimum, that person was going to be grimly tortured, if not incinerated. It's difficult for survivors of the Holocaust to look at the Wehrmacht (Nazi Army) as anything more than millions of terrorists.

What we're experiencing instead of pinchers, hot oil, drawn swords and racks for torturing, are the bombs and other possibilities of mass destruction of the industrial and modern eras.

I do not think it is the religion that causes violence. I think it is the people from Middle Eastern countries who cause violence. They have grown up under crooked, militant, dictatorships. They have been brainwashed since they were young that the West is trying to attack Islam. Further, for some reason that I am not quite sure of, they are unable to handle the differences between people without resorting to violence. Any opinion that differs from your own, be it religious or not, deserves death. I know that this does not describe every Muslim, but it does describe those who are the sources of violence in their own countries and others.

My brother, to truly understand the answer to your question you will have to look through the Muslim perspective.

Muslims ahem been pushed in a corner with their backs to the wall. If u cud perhaps study the worlds history , u wud know that many Muslim scientists and scholars have given a lot to the field of science and education.

U might also be surprised to know about the good relations Muslims had with Jews and Christians. Muslims had given asylum to Jew brothers in Istanbul (Constantinople).

i am sure we can once again see such peaceful and friendly times. What we need is to understand each other and discard our false fears and prejudiced views.

No religion has taught anyone to kill people for the cause of their revival. Islam by itself is a peaceful and beautiful religion. Only a few of them are indulged in such criminal activities and they misguide the whole society. No good things can be achieved through violence.

simple, because of the area they live in. The middle east is a very oppressed area, socio-economic oppression, rights-oppression, sexual oppression, and etc. The rich are very rich and the poor is very poor, and the ratio is highly disproportionate. The poor is left with nothing, how else are they going to express themselves, to even get noticed? By doing things like terrorism and blowing things up, that's how they vent out their anger, frustration and hate. Of course, if they had any other choice I'm sure killing people is not their first choice, because that's stated in their holy text. Hopefully.

Many of them think they are defending themselves, for example why did 7/7 happen the leader of that group of suicide bombers said because the coalition invaded Iraq, what was the justification behind 9/11 supposedly it was America's blind support for Israel. Why is Israel attacked? Because they oppressing Palestinians and so on.

But these guys fail to realize the Islam tells us explicitly that we CANNOT injure or fight any non-combatants.

muslims are 100% occupied with promoting islam through propaganda and violance. They are also occupied with trying to keep muslims under full control because lots are secretly leaving islam

Christians and Catholics are more concerned about promoting the love of jesus through unselfishly helping millions of poor, sick and oppressed people all over the globe. As a result more and more people experience the love of jesus christ through the humanity of Catholics and christians

No matter what anyone says i will always have a great love and respect for anyone who promotes love and helps those who suffer

I think Islam still has a way to go to catch up with the early Christian church but it's getting there. I haven't found much evidence of peace in either of them.
