This may be off base but I wonder if you might mean DSN rather than DNS. The acronym DSN stands for Data Source Name. Basically, it it is a synonym for (or pointer to) a database.

If you have web pages that need to switch between databases, you would have a different DSN for each database. Your script(s) would use whichever DSN was appropriate for your purpose. (You can also have multiple DSNs that refer to the same database)

Short for Domain Name System (or Service), an Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic, they're easier to remember. The Internet however, is really based on IP addresses. Every time you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the name into the corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name www.example.com might translate to 192.168.1.1. The DNS system is, in fact, its own network.

So what you looking actually is IPs. As many IP addresses you have that many DNS you can create.

On 1 DNS entry can be hosted 100s and 100s domain names.

Well I have never seen a server without DNS. Is the server connected to the internet? Can you ping other sites by name like ping yahoo.com if so DNS must be working.

DNS simply supplies the lookup table from domain name to IP address. Your ISP supplies DNS to you, your server can supply DNS to your local network but that really is all it should be supplying.
