It's a little unusual. Usually running wins out over weight lifting in terms of muscle building.

However, you didn't give us many details (how much strength training, how much weight you gained, what your diet looks like and how much running you are doing).

I suspect, though that you are eating more because you are expending more calories and you are building muscle. As your body acclimates to the changes you are putting yourself through, I suspect that running might very well take over and cause weight loss.

As other posters have also described, muscle does weigh more than fat. So you could be building muscle and losing fat. I would worry a little less about your actual weight and worry more about your body fat percentage. So long as that number is going down, you are headed in the right direction.

Good luck.

Muscle weighs more than fat, so yes it is normal. You should however notice that your clothes fit differently at this point. You can lose fat with all that excercise, but your weight will naturally rise. I have a very athletic friend who is about 5'5" and she weighs roughly 140 pounds. That might sound heavy to some people, but she is still a very tiny girl, doesn't look fat in the least. She is very lean and toned. She just happened to play a lot of sports in the past and now she is a police officer, which requires physical fitness and training. As far as the protein shakes, you need protein if you are going to strength train. It helps your muscles repair, and will lessen the muscle soreness afterwards. Essentially working your muscles is tearing the tissue, when your tissue begins to mend, that's when the pain usually kicks in. Have a shake after you work out, and don't forget to stretch, you should feel little to no soreness at all.

Well, first of all muscle is heavier than fat about 3 times(or 7 times, I am not sure). Maybe it is because you gain more muscles.

Muscle is heavier than fats. It might be due to your diet that you are putting on lean muscle mass. So long your body is getting firmer and your waist getting smaller, you are quite fine.
