Not necessarily. It is rather dangerous. Put a rear of the same size in front till you can get a new one.

Yes you can mix/match low profile and stand profile tires on a car provided that the resulting outside diameter of the tire and wheel is the same. In your situation, this is not the case as you will have to mount a different size tire onto the the same wheel. This would result in different sized wheels/tires and it could adversely effect your car's ride, handling, and possibly throw off the speedometer and odometer which could be illegal where you live. While you didn't ask for general advice, I would offer that it is best to replace all four tires at the same time. There is no unimportant tire on a car. Even on a front wheel drive car, the back wheels must maintain their traction so you won't lose control. If you don't want the low profile size tires, see a local tire shop or one of the many online tire sites for a wheel and tire combination that will fit your Pontiac. You will have many options to choose from. Good luck.

It won't affect the brake pads, but it will affect both handling and brake performance. That can be rather dangerous. You need to have matching tires on both front wheels.
I wouldn't be overly concerned about the drive line. Most of the time you're not driving in an absolutely straight line and there will be some difference in rotational speed from side to side. That's the differential's job to allow that without wear. But handling and brake performance are a totally different story. Get it fixed.

no, but I would get the proper tires, not real safe, if the person didn't care enough to put the right size tire on, then it's a good indication he did't care about condition, if putting used tires on a vehicle, it is important that the tires be put on in the direction of rotation they were on the other vehicle, and in the case of steel belted, they may look fine but the belts can unravel without warning. Tires are too important to fool around with even some cheap wal-mart tires are better than mismatched tires.

I agree with Rob - and if your car has front wheel drive, it probably isn't too good for the differential to have the different speed of the wheels all the time. Perhaps a mechanic out there can comment on that.
You should never have different sizes on the same axle, for many reasons.

They shouldn't make the brake pads wear but you should definitely get that fixed for safety reasons.
Handling and probably braking will be affected.
