Would they perform the background check first so that they dont classify people to that rating that may be unqualified? How does it work?!

They'll do a National Agency Check at the time of your enlistment. This check is very basic. They run your name through the FBI, CIA, DIA and other law enforcement / intelligence agencies to see if there's a file on you.

After you're on active duty you'll be required to fill out a very extensive questionnaire and submit finger prints. This will initiate a major background investigation. FBI field agents can and will contact some of the people in your life such as neighbors, friends, coworkers, teachers, etc... They'll run credit checks too.

If the SBI (special background investigation) doesn't turn up anything disqualifying you'll be granted a Top Secret (SCI) (SCI is for sensitive compartmented information) security clearance.

If you are found not eligible for the security clearance you will not be allowed to work in the intelligence field. You'll be forced to convert to another rate.

first there is a prelim screening to see if anything pops up that could intially deny you. then, once that happens, you are granted an Interim Clearance so that you can get into the buildings during A school. Your final, official clearance can take a year or longer to happen, and if it is not completed by the time you finish A school, you will either be kept there on hold or sent to your cvommand to do non Classified type stuff until it does. I know you said you were going Reserves, but for AD types, this typically means mess cranking.

After getting the classification, you will receive a low lever clearance... or maybe even just a red badge... then, after 4 or 5 months, your full clearance will come in.
