This is the amount of cooling you would get in 24 hours if you had a one tonne block of ice in your room instead.

A/C Manufacturers measure air conditioning power in BTUs. Each BTU, British Thermal Unit, is equal to the amount of energy required to raise one pound of water, one degree. However for the rest of us who are not engineers, air conditioners are rated in 'Tonnes'.

1 Tonne is around 12,000 BTUs/per hour.

In simpler terms, this is the amount of cooling you would get in 24 hours if you had a one tonne block of ice in your room instead.

Scientifically, this is the energy required to melt 1 ton of ice in one day, at 32 degrees.

A ton of cooling capacity is the amount of cooling that would be provided by melting a ton of ice. Thus, a central air conditioning system that is rated as a 1-ton system would provide the same cooling as melting one ton of ice per hour.

------edit-----
A ton is equal to 12,000 BTUs. Thus, a 2-ton air conditioner is equivalent to a 24,000 BTU air conditioner.

The unit of measure used in air conditioning to describe the heating or cooling capacity of a system. One ton of heat represents the amount of heat needed to melt one ton (2,000 lbs.) of ice in one hour. 12,000 Btu/hr equals one ton of heat.

One ton of refrigeration is heat energy removed from 1 ton (2,000 lbs) of water at 32°F to change it to ice at 32°F over a 24 hour period.

2,000 x 144 Btu = 288,000 Btu in 24 hours.

1 ton of refrigeration = 12,000 Btu/hr.

one means only one or one less from two. One ton is - if you minus one ton from two tons, it would be one ton. clear!
(It is the quantity of air passed through the conditioner during one hour If room size is small, the entire area would be cool with one ton and for largeer area of room, more air has to be conditioned and pass through, say 1.5 ton up wards)
