Try walking first, if that does not get you out of breath then try a combination of walking and running(alternating).

pushing too hard too fast can lead to injuries which are very annoying.

You could also try some other things such and swimming and yoga (which are much lower impact than running and hence much safer, but perhaps not as good as running for loosing weight) so that you are not always doing the same thing.

You already know the answers. Eat healthy, and exercise. Start a program and stick to your routine. You can jog and walk until you are able to run. Run easy until you need to walk and then walk until you can run again. In a short time you will be able to run the entire distance. Exercise burns calories and weight gain or lose it the amount of calories you burn and the amount you eat. It takes 3500 calories to make a pound of weight. Drink plenty of water, control your diet, and exercise. You are probably going to be sore the first week or so of your program. Do not stop, you will get used to the exercise and the soreness will not last, you must out last your doubts. Start by doing 1 mile at least 3 to 5 times per week. After 1 month you can move up to 2 miles and then 3 miles. In 3 months you should be able to cover 3 miles without any pain or discomfort. Get moving.

Yes Running helps a great deal losing weight! in fact once you get into it the weight falls off!

the best way to start like all things is very slow! do some small jogs, walking when you feel the need to! if you can do around 3 runs a week, and once you get your stamina building up you can lengthen your distance!

If you start training now! you could be fit enough for the London Marathon Next Year!
it might help give you that incentive to keep running if you had that to strive for!

start with a walking routine (25-35 minutes of walking at a good pace). You don't have to start out jogging.

then when you think you can push yourself some more (you may be just doing the walking for a week or two), you can try walking 2 minutes, jogging 2 minutes, when walking 3 minutes, jogging 2 minutes, walking 4 minutes, jogging 2 minutes, walking 5 minutes, jogging 2 minutes. then do the walking 5 minutes, jogging 2 minutes one more time to get just under 30 minutes or do another to go a bit over 30 minutes of exercise.

then when you can push yourself more (maybe after 2 weeks to a month)try walking 5 minutes, jogging 5 minutes for 3-4 times to get 30-40 minutes of exercise in.

then slowly increase the minutes of jogging so they are more thant he minutes you are walking until you can push yourself up to jogging full time.

you can also try using Cardio Coach. its an mp3 workout where you are coached when to warm-up, go at a steady pace, and do challenges. You can do almost any cardio exercise with this, be it walking, jogging, using a treadmill, elliptical machine, stationary bike, etc...

with the walking/jogging, even if there are no hills around and you are coached to climb a hill for 20 secinds, just do a fast sprint (wheras with a machine you can increase incline, resistance, and speed).

its an awesome program.

you can get a free download of volume 6 at a lower audio quality but it may be too hard to start with (its on her March 2nd post):

if you decide to try the free one, go to the cardio coach website to read about what you should be feeling when he says level 1, 2, or 3 as you will be working out at these 3 levels...also some level 4.

I just began running in the past year, how i started was to run at my own pace for 2 mins, then walk for 3 mins, and repeated this process 5 times. Then after I felt comfortable with the 2 mins, I ran for 3 mins, then walked for 2 mins. Once I felt comfortable with that I ran for 4 mins. and walked for 1 min. After I got to this point I felt my body was ready to run continuously, and I would run a mile or 2, I am now about to run my 2nd 10K race and I have ran 5 5Ks!!! GOOD LUCK and CONGRADS on taking the first step to running

After my 3rd baby, I was over 200 lbs, i would go to the jogging trail, warm up, then walk/jog, walk/jog, pushing myself to jog further each time I went out. I was going about every other day. After 9 months of doing this I was up to 16 - 20 miles per week and down to 130 lbs. Just stay focused, don't give up, it will happen but takes time. The plateaus you hit will last about 2 weeks, but keep a journal of your weight and how far you are running, and it will keep you encouraged too. Good luck!

Megan,

Check out Dr. Al Sears (google him). He is the author of a book called "The Doctors Heart Cure". He describes his PACE interval training program in great detail there. It is easily adapted to your physical condition and adjusts as you grow stronger. It does not take hours out of your day and is healthier than just running. He also has some no nonsense suggestions on diet.

It works for me.

Why don't you start by going power walking as that is a fun and if you have a friend to go walking with that makes it easier. But if not you could go by yourself, also why don't you invest in some exercise DVDs and work out at home as that is also good
