It has recently come up again in the media, as a serious suggestion - not sure who started it up this time.

Sybil : A lawyers job is to get his client off, or failing that, to get as low a penalty as possible for that client - guilty or innocent. This is the way the law is. If you find it distasteful then instead of bashing one person why don't you take affirmative action? Write letters to your congressmen/women, or campaign in other ways to change things.
