John 5:39,40 Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

Jesus here shows the balance between knowledge of scripture and a relationship with Christ. Too many people thank they can just do an occasional prayer and "feel good" about God and that is enough to have a "relationship" with him. But that is the same as learning to count to 5 and thinking you have a degree in advanced mathematics.

Just as you would not expect a child to figure out how to count, add, subtract, multiple, divide, do fractions, ratios. algrebra, geometry, trig, calc and statistics using nothing but a pile of blocks, so we should not except to have a fll, rich and real relationship with God using nothing but a "good feeling".

Just as a child needs to study a math book to understand math, so a Christian needs to read the scriputres to understand enough about God to be able to have a mature relationship with him.

Today, people want to ignore the scriptures, and just have the relationship, with no understanding or foundation for it. The group to whom Jesus was speaking in John 5 tended to go the other way. They spend so much time studying and slicing and dicing and organizing and categorizing the scriptures, they had no time for the realtionship.

The proper balance is a relationship based on an understanding of who God is and how to relate to him from the scriputres.

You have to have a personal loving relationship with Jesus to be able to understand the Bible.

Knowledge of Hello magazine or personal loving relationship with Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie?

It's all the same fan magazine stuff except Jesus is dead and Angelina & Brad are married and just about as unlikely to be getting into a personal relationship with you or me as is Jesus.

There is many so call religions & so call Christians that do not portray themselves as a true Christain, & yet they think they have eternal life, Yet they will believe anything. Many will even say, it don't make any difference what you belief, Just believe in Jesus, My friend Satan believes in Jesus, But satan can not hold all the truth. He will slip somewhere on the road.

You need both.

All logic and no heart makes you a Pharisee type. All about rules and no love or grace.

On the other hand, all emotion and no knowledge leaves you susceptible to lies and causes you to be an ineffectual Christian. You'll have less faith also without knowing what it is you actually believe.

false dichotomy
someone who loves Jesus will have a hunger for scripture

someone asked once which is better: an hour of prayer on your knees or an hour of study and the answer suggested was an hour of prayer and study on your knees

we know knowledge for facts and data can puff up and love edifies but true love for God would result in treasuring His word

Knowledge of the Bible is why I'm an atheist. I don't think I can have a loving relationship with something I don't believe in.

PRAY DAILY,WITH ALL OUR HEART,SOUL AND MIND,TO
HAVE GODS UNDERSTANDING.Study to show thyself approved
2Tm:2:14: Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.
2Tm:2:15: Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
2Tm:2:16: But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
2Tm:2:17: And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;
2Tm:2:18: Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.
2Tm:2:19: Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.
2Tm:2:20: But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.
2Tm:2:21: If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.
2Tm:2:22: Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
2Tm:2:23: But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.
2Tm:2:24: And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,
2Tm:2:25: In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
2Tm:2:26: And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.
GOD IS LOVE AND HE IS THE WORD.
