how can we bring the dowry system to an end?

Best thing to end the dowry system from the society is to start thinking positively. When we stay in our closed religion, caste & creed society we follow all that there exist in our societies, but when we come out from the closet of all these social relationship we think more like humans & see others as humans. I have come across so many young people in yahoo answers forum & even met them personally where each belonging to different religion or caste or region is in love with someone other then from his or her religion or caste or region & they want to marry but they are afraid of their parents. They ask me how we can marry in according to civil marriage procedure under the Special Marriage Act, 1954 without informing our parents. If these people marry as they wish the very fact the trading of dowry itself will come to an end as here both of them decide for themselves not parents deciding for them along with the dowry that has to be taken or given in the marriage. I have seen its the parents who themselves ask & even give dowry not the children in most of the cases, now don't check me of few of the stray cases reported in T.V. regarding bridegroom demanding dowry, such exceptions are always there, but mostly the younger generation is only dreaming of love for each other rather then dowry items to be given or taken. Let the shackles or religious marriages be thrown away & inter-religious, inter-caste,inter-regional marriage be encouraged & such be preformed without much financial spending before the marriage officer/registrar under the Special Marriage Act,1954, & let the parents also be present as lawful witnesses for such marriage. Let’s stop enormous spending on marriages that gives nothing but financial burden to both the families resulting in demand & giving of money in the form of dowry. This is a social evil we ourselves have brought in the society in large & we by going in economical marriages as I mentioned above will get rid of this social evil. Let the religious priest & astrologers etc go to hell after all what all these guys will be giving you but suffering with their foolish, unscientific & illogical opinions & suggestions. Become logical & reasonable in your approach & you'll see how this evil of dowry evaporates from our society.

By changing our own attitudes. Every community / caste from every region of India, be they Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Parsi including all the various sub castes, has a blatant or subtle approach to dowry/give-take during marriage, in varying degrees. It is also about time that our girls, especially the educated ones, have some consideration for their parents, put their foot down and refuse to get married to those demanding dowries. Unfortunately the pressure to be "married" is too high in India. In any event, unless our own mind sets change, nothing will ever change.

I think, you first need to define Dowry. This word is often mis-used by people, just like the word corruption. There is no real universal definition for corruption, just they are moral values. Similarly is the word dowry.

Let everyone in India agree on this term. For your information, the present day dowry is very high among Muslims.

Dowry system cannot be eliminated.Only the terminology will be different. In matrimonial advt.it is written "decent marriage
assured".What does it mean?
This is a economic problem.I have got a daughter who
is not goodlooking,but I have got money.There is a boy
who is poor but otherwise good for my daughter.So I shall
agree for a small redistribution of wealth so that my
daughter gets a good husband.There is nothing wrong it.
If the girl is really goodlooking his family will be so
proud and haughty that you cannot go near them.They
will only want IIT's and IIM's.Is it not bad?

According to Islamic laws of marriage not even a single penny is to be spent by the side of the bride & entire expenditure of marriage is to be borne by groom's side. I don't know whether this fact is known to most of people of India or not. At the name of giving gift , an illegal backdoor is opened here & by treachery & manipulation & so, dowry becomes the tradition as being compulsory without even realising that it is wholly illegal & punishable too. Our so called intellectual class people don't have any time to study those laws of religion which defines the sanctity & purity of very important phase of one's life called marriage & violation of that badly harms the very purity of the spirit of the same , though they have time to watch every damn thing on TVs & DVDs.
Islamic laws give strong protection to brides in all respects. If in case of dowry , costly marriage functions & so many meaningless ceremonies , if one studies Islamic laws thoroughly & carefully, within 3 days one will realise how much ignorant we are & just watching our daughters are being harassed. If assessed critically I believe that ovewhelming majority of Hindus too will agree with those ones. Big sized baraats , more than two functions, costly feasts & dowry are all anti Islamic & illegal. But the question is : Who bothers ? NGOs too keep quiet on this.

Why do you want to bring it to an end? Because it doesnt reasonate with your belief system? How narrowminded of you, its not for me or you to decide what should be demolished. Dowry system has been going on for centuries, and many people have it as a tradition.

Dowry in our country cannot be abolished, atleast for next 100 years. As long as the giver exists the demander will be there. This can be eradicated only there are no arranged marriages!!!

* One should not restrict the problem only to his family. It is a national issue.
* One should not restrict the problem to national alone, it has to be followed in his personal life also.

I mean to say, for first point, he should not fight only for his family welfare in this matter. He should report, if any case, occurs nearby him and try to save others family. He should not consider that, it is someone's problem.

The second one, whenever it comes to his life, he should not think that, it is his daughter's life or son's life and so accepting dowry.
