The reason people gain weight when they quit smoking is because they are trying to break a habit where they are putting something in their mouth , like a baby with a pacifier.

That's why they say chew gum or suck on a sucker if you feel the urge. I quit smoking 6 years ago and didn't gain any weight but it was't easy because I did it cold turkey. Keep busy and your mind on everything but cigs and food, you can do it.

it is very true, I tried and believe me I gained 20 lbs, All I wanted to do was eat and eat, it was crazy, so yes, I did start back and now I can see where I am losing the weight that I had gained, If you can have control over the not eating while you are trying to stop then you shouldn't gain any weight, but I had to have something in my mouth because I had smoked for so long and it was terrible not to be able to put a cigarette
in my mouth, so I ate and I ate.If you stop smoking just be strong don't be a wimp like me, you will make it.

Quitting smoking and gaining weight are widely expected to go hand in hand and they surely did in my personal experience.

The reason seems to be, that instead of smoking you will look for another kind of distraction - which very often will be eating, especially sweets.

I tried to identify this kind of "substitute eating" and drink a glass of mineral water instead. But still I eat more now that I quit smoking.

Still, from a health perspective quitting smoking will be worth the effort.

Yes. Sadly it's true. The average weight gain is around 25 pounds. After a few months of being smoke free, it gets a little easier to lose the weight.

NO, overeating causes weight increase.

Many ex-smokers crave a replacement for their habit, they simply resort to sweets and chocolate, more alcohol, simply eating more.

So it is simply the lack of willpower to find a balance in life without smoking that means they eat more than they did = they put weight on.

Smokers are drug addicts and withdrawal impacts people in different ways - not everyone turns to food as a comfort.

Yes, I can't believe all these answers that say you eat more or you have oral fixation. They don't know what they are talking about. Even if you eat the same you will gain.

The TRUTH is that you gain weight because your metabolism slows down.
Your system doesn't have to work as hard to get oxygen into the blood stream. The oxygen level returns to normal within 24 hrs of quiting.

If you don't want to gain weight you will have to be more active assuming you are eating the same.

Most people when quitting smoking will replace the habit with snacking. This causes the weight gain. It is healthier to gain a few punds than it is to quit smiking, so don't let that get in the way of your decision.

PS. I need to quit also.
