I see this used a lot and I nkow it means Praise Be Unto Him but I don't actually know why it is used.

I'm guessing its out of respect or something along those lines.

your correct...its out of respect for the prophets....all prophets of God deserve respect and our constant rememberance as to the standard we should hope to attain...saying that phrase after a prophets name is the same as asking Gods continued forgiveness of any possible fault they may have had as well. prophets of God were better than all other men but they were still human.

It mean Peace Be Upon Him. It is said in respect after the name of any Prophet in Islam. They all deserve respect.

It means Peace Be Unto Him. It's said after every single Prophet by muslims. If referring to more than one prophet, it's PBUT, for Peace Be Unto Them. It's sort of a respect, like you would respect your aunt by stating aunt before her name.

“Muslims say Peace be upon Him after every mention of Mohammed’s name, as a mark of respect as well as for sending blessing upon him.
The Arabic transliteration of Peace be upon Him is sallallahu alayhi wa sallam which is usually abbreviated as saw.
We say this for all prophets.

It means Peace be upon Him(for singular)........we muslims use for Prophets generally....(May peace be upon them)....however Muslim scholars stress to avoid using abbreviations and advice to write in full for more respect.

STAR B I HAVE SEEN ALL ANSWERS TELLING WHAT
BUT YOU QUESTION IS WHY
LET ME TELL YOU WHY
TO HIS HIGHNESS PRINCE XX .PRINCE OF YYYYY
THAT IS A NORMAL WAY OF TALKING
YOU EXCELLENCY WE ALSO USE THIS ADDRESSING DIFFERENT RANK
WE ALSO HAVE SEEN THE PRESENCE OF SOME PRESIDENTS AND KINGS HOW WAS HANDS CLAPPING
ALL THAT YOU USE FOR PPLE
WHO ARE TAKING A ROLE IN LIFE
SOME OF THEM SUFFERED . THIS SUFFER COMES OF HIS CHOICE
EITHER IT WAS FOR DEVELOPING HIS COUNTRY OR FIGHTING IMPERIALISM OR FIGHTING COMMUNISM
AND OTHERS SUFFER BECAUSE OF THEIR BELIEF
YOU MAY OR ,AY NOT KNOW THE SUFFER OF OUR PROPHET IN ORDER THAT THE WORD OF GOD REACHES US INCLUDING YOU
CHRISTIANS TALK ABOUT THE SUFFER OF JESUS (PBUH) WE HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT HE WAS THERE TILL (33) SO IT WAS ONLY COUPLE OF YEARS IN SUFFER
PLUS ANOTHER FACT HE WAS AMONGST PPLE WHO ALREADY KNEW GOD
SO THINK OF THE SUFFER OF OUR PROPHET
AND THINK OF OF HIS MAJESTY ONCE HE DIED HE STOPPED BEING HIS HIGHNESS WE CALLED HIM
ALMAR700M
OR ALMAGHFOOR LAH
FOR THE PROPHET WE SAY SALATU ALLAH 3ALAHI WASALAMH

Muslims use it to say "Peace be unto him", but in reality they are mimicking the sound of spitting, like spitting onto Muhammad for inventing islam and causing their lives to be in such a mess.
