Beethoven was not born deaf, rather he became deaf as he got really old. That way, he knew all the mechanics of music theory way before he was deaf. Any professionally trained musician can tell you that you can hear music and how it sounds in your head once you have studied sightsinging and eartraining. Beethoven simply knew the mechanics and could hear the music in his head as he wrote it, thus he no longer NEEDED to hear, although it would have been nice. There is actually a story about some of his later pieces being composed while his piano was on the floor so he could feel the vibrations.

Beethoven wasn't born deaf and was incredibly smart so he picked up on sounds naturally and memorized them. For example, when he became deaf, he memorized each sound of the keys on his piano. This was how he mainly composed music. He also learned how to read lips.

Hi.I think his deafness was progressive and he could still hear enough to compose and conduct most of his works It was when he conducted the 9th Symphony for the first time he was probably totally deaf.

When he became fully deaf, he cut the legs off of his piano and laid down on the floor, banging out the notes. This is how the 9th symphony was composed...on the floor.

He had been writing for a long time before, and he could 'hear' the music in his head. Just like closing your eyes and imagining something you had seen before. Best music? Hmm... maybe, maybe not, but it's awesome stuff!

"Best" is a value judgment.

Another notable deaf musician is percussionist Evelyn Glennie. You could learn how she plays and composes at her website, below.
