Because what we can perceive is the physical side only. To get a glimpse of the spiritual side of a divine personality, is impossible for us. We want to know the spiritual also through our perceptible senses.
When only we meet a true saint, that can happen. Reading
gita or bible or quran, and commenting on the spiritual essence of it, is not at all possible for we, the ordinary mortals.

I just wanted to respond to "I love the Universe's" reply.
Jesus was the most unselfish man to ever walk on this earth. That's why he suffered for everyone else. You are a coward, and an ignorant sheep among the wolves. If you were on one of the 9/11 flights, you wouldn't throw yourself at one of the attackers to save the lives of the other 300? I certainly would. I would be ashamed of myself if I had your thoughts and had to look at myself in the mirror everyday. There are some things worth dying for and the ones who fear death the most are the ones that are unsure where they're going afterward. Good luck with life. You sound like you'll need it.

Although it's true that we need to remember the love, which is what His sacrifice was for us, we also need to remember how He humbled Himself and died in the most humiliating and painful way during that time period in order for us to have eternal life if we follow His Word and lead a faithful life.
Like anything in life, we need to remember the good and the bad and realize that no matter how bad something might be, there is always something good to come out of it. And Jesus proved that in ways we will never understand or ever be able to match.

Yeah, neither I didn't get the point. Of course, we are thankful because Christ gave his life, died on a cross for us (Christians) to be saved, but that doesn't mean that we should worship him because of the cross, or him on a cross. You wouldn't display the image of the instrument used when someone dearly to you died on it, would you?

Some people need a reminder of how he suffered for US.
Though he may no longer be on the cross, his sacrifice was perfect and for all time.

Crosses and crucifixes DO associate with and bring to mind Christ's love and sacrifice for us.

John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

We keep referring to his pain because he suffered that pain and death on the cross in our place.
Can you think of a way of showing greater love for someone than to suffer and die in their place?
