The Navy provides transport for the Marines.
The Marines are a part of the Navy.
They are all the best.
Do some research and pick the one who's jobs best fit with your future plan.
Will you use the Military like college and move on afterward, or make serving a career. These are things you must figure out before joining.

The Navy, of a matter of warfare, sometimes needs an armed force to land and hold terrain (a "beachhead" is often what it is called) until the Army can deploy their own men and equipment and then proceed inland. The Navy's armed force is called the Marines, and they have a very honorable history - not just with the American forces, but throughout history...
Even the Greeks and Persians had their specialized forces on board their ships to land and fight on land. They are the Navy's "Army" so to speak. Likewise, the Marines have their own "Air Force" and they do coordinate military operations with the regular Air Force when necessary.
Right now, in my opinion, isn't a good time to join any of the armed forces. The political climate isn't a good time to be supporting the United States' foreign adventures. I served back in the late 1970's and 1980's and considering what I have to look back on, I certainly wouldn't join the corrupt and immoral directions, both domestically or overseas, that this presidency and the corporate forces have been leading the country for the last six+ years.
Wait and see what happens for a couple+ or 3 or 4 more years. Wait till after the 2008 elections at least, before making a decision. I think things will be getting a lot worse before they get better. I'm no chicken, but even a chicken has a head and a heart.
I live in Greece and Spain, and my friend, this is no time to be an American soldier thinking that the American Government is doing good things overseas... They aren't, and nor does a majority of the world's people think Americans are doing good for the world. Something very wrong happened with the NeoCons, and it's not over yet.
If you want to fight for a Corporation's bottom line, well, take your pick and fight, but I wouldn't fight for any g-d CEO - and this absolutely corrupt administration is full of them.
Democracy, let me add, is a false reason for the latest set of wars, as well, so don't put or keep your head in the sand and ignore what you should or will know in five years, anyway.
Get smart and stay out. The military might be a good place to go for some, but there are other avenues to direct your interests and hopes. Explore them. The Mill is just one of them.

The Marines are an entity in the Department of the Navy.
Basically, the Marines are a subsection of the Navy. I could go on about what the Marines and Squids are doing on those ships but I will avoid that since it is a don't ask don't tell service......
The Army is the best branch but I'm probably bias.
Figure out what you want out of your service and enlist in the branch that is going to do the most for you. So if you want to serve on a ship you probably shouldn't join the Army or Air Force for example.
That is a pretty good thing about the zookeepers and gorillas in the post below mine.
My father-in-law retired from the Navy. He was Seabee and stationed in Vietnam. I got drunk with him one night and he started talking about Vietnam. I didn't hear anything about combat but I did hear a lot about all the stuff he stole from the Air Force.

In any Armed Forces, there are basically 3 Services as Navy, Army, Air Force.
As the name suggests, the navy is basically employed to safeguard the maritime borders. If you appreciate, such borders have water, shore and air space above the sea, therefore, modern navys are four dimensional as : -
Navy - To guard the waters
Marines - To guard the shores
Submarines Corps - For underwater employment
Naval Aviation - To guard the air space above the sea.
Hope that has explained the difference between Navy and Marine Corps. The Navy is main force that operates inside/ under the sea where as Marine Corps is basically employed along the shore line with limited operational capability in the sea.
2nd part of your question is more of your own apptitude. All these services are equally important but it depends what you like the most and if you have the apptitude for that.

I like the Marine Corps,
it's the toughest of all.
During the era of the Roman empire, the naval forces included legionaries for boarding actions. These were troops primarily trained in land warfare, and did not need to be skilled at handling a ship. Much later during the age of sail, a component of marines served a similar role, being ship-borne soldiers who were used either during boarding actions, as sharp-shooters, or in raids along the shore.
Eventually the Marine Corps became a separate arm in the United States, with their own equipment. However the U.S. Navy SEALs and the British Royal Marines now serve a similar function, being a ship-based force specially-trained in commando-style operations and tactics. The Royal Marines also have their own special forces, the SBS (Special Boat Service); similar to the US Navy SEALs and the Boat Troops of the SAS.

I am going to say the Marine Corps. But that is because I am a proud marine wife, however I have a little sister in the Army and a brother in the Navy. If you must know they are all awesome. All of them are heros...
It just depends on the challenge you want. Marines would be the most challenging. Navy, I consider to be our medics, the army, get the worst work, but work there buts off, and the Airforce, is brains.
Now that is just my opinion. So take your pick...

I hear its real hard to advance in the Army but much easier in the Air Force, If you like being imprisoned at sea for 3-9 months go NAVY, if you want to be in the Action Join the Marines and Army as grunts, Navy and Marines have a rivalry, whe I 1st got of Boot acmp and went to A-School in Norfolk I found out at the Base Enlisted Club real quick when a Marine heard me say, "Whats up with their haircuts shaved on the side ?", They wanted to fight me because I said this. Lucky for me there were some big squids to back me up and I slipped out the back when no one was lookin

The Marine Corps is just part of the Navy as its amphibious landing team. It is better to join the Marine Corps because it is the elite fighting force of the Armed Forces.

Basic basic basic overview:
Air Force => Planes
Navy => Boats
Army => Infantry and a little dabbling in boats and planes.
Marine Corps. => The hard-core more intensely-trained army. There are much fewer Marines than any other branch of the military.
Which one is best for you depends on what you want. Right now, the Navy is probably safest because there's not a lot of naval warfare going on in the areas around Iraq and other conflicts facing America at ths time.

My understanding that the principal difference in role is between the Marines and the Army and the Marines are a specialized force for beach landings and otherwise there is substantial overlap between the Army and the Navy.
If you want to delve into origins, I think that you may wish to look at the UK's Royal Marines which are a far smaller outfit with a far more traditional role for marines.
