You should definitely buy a Ps2, not only are they very affordable now, but the Ps2 has a game library that numbers in the thousands. Many of these games can now be had for $20 or less, especially because of the emergence of the next-gen consoles within the past year.
In addition, you're getting backward compatibility with any original Playstation games you own, and a DVD player integrated into the unit.

Here is my Ps2 top five:

5) God of War
4) Metal Gear Solid 3
3) Ace Combat 5
2) Okami
1) Shadow of the Colossus

Should you buy a PS2? Sure.. it's a great system. If you can afford it, I'd go with the PS3 (I have both). The PS3 is 'backward' compatible with the PS2 games also so you get the full range of playability.

As far as 5 good games?

Depends on the genre of your preference.

5 blockbusters would be:

Ratchet and clank (any of the series of 3 are awesome, funny and GREAT playability)
Grand Theft Auto 3 (the original, vice city, san andreas or vice city stories all are worth playing all the way through)
Final Fantasy X - One of the best RPG games ever made.. has a great story, characters you actually end up relating to, and a twisted story line that keeps you guessing all the way to the very end.
God of War (Either 1 or 2, both are incredible games with great game-play.. I'd recommend the second one since it seems a bit easier to play. The first one had some linear roadblocks that were overcome with the second title)
Black - another great title for the PS2 a first person shooter with everything to offer.. great gameplay and graphics and a good selection of weapons

Hopefully that'll give you a few to start you off! Good luck, mate!

Honestly, at this moment in time the PS2 is the only console that is definitely worth the money. It's probably the best console of all time, and it's (relatively) cheap now. As for games...I don't know if I could limit it to just five. It really depends on what type of games you're into. There's Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, God of War, Devil May Cry, Xenosaga, Kingdom Hearts, Guitar Hero, Suikoden, .hack, Star Ocean, Radiata Stories, Rogue Galaxy, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, Need for Speed, Gran Turismo, Disgaea, Castlevania, and more. I doubt all of those will appeal to you, but the PS2's gaming library has something for everyone.

PS2s are good to buy because:

1) Relatively cheap (compared to, for example, a PS3),
2) TONS of games (since it's been out several years), and
3) Cheap games (especially if you can get ahold of used ones).

If you don't need the latest / greatest, a PS2 can provide TONS of pretty cheap enjoyment.

As to the best games, here's a great list of the 25 best PS2 games, with reviews. You should be able to find at least 5 of them that suit your needs. (Especially look for PS2 "Greatest Hits", which are guaranteed to be $19.99 or lower brand new):
