My daughter need to get a car, and she really wants a Hybrid. Is this a good car for new drivers(teenager). How much better is H model over the regular RX350 on the environment. I figure its a safe car, and would rather see her in a Mid-size SUV, then a tiny Prius. Any reliability troubles? Thanks everyone.

By the way, she has been driving my G-class, so I dont believe the size will affect her too much

I have a G55 AMG...

I pulled the trigger on the hybrid, the benefit on MPG is so-so, but she wanted it because it was a hybrid. I don't mind, and would much rather have this sitting in my driveway than a civic. She looks good in it!

I have to agree with everyone so far and am not really sold that Hybrid is any better then gas, probably worse then the new diesels. Unless she's going to be hauling around a bunch of people the RX350 isn't a very environmentally friendly vehicle. Sounds like you have plenty of money to spend, but a Civic/Prius what have is the best vehicle for a teen and the environment. Both have plenty of safety features and get great gas mileage, while still having room for 3 adult passengers. Though if you must get a big SUV, the RX400H is the most environmentally friendly on the road. The opposite would be to get gas burning smoke spewing Benz ML500 which is one of the worst polluters on the road.

Hybrids are very bad on the environment. There was just a study saying that the NiMH battery production needed to make a Prius makes the damage to the environment over the entire life of the car worse than pure gas powered vehicles. Diesel is very good for fuel economy, and now with ULSD diesel, it's nearly a wash between gas and diesel as far as environmental impact is concerned. Real fuel economy is about maintenance and driving habits... so keep your air filter and o2 sensor working. The Prius is only decent in city environments, since it uses regenerative braking (uses the energy lost to braking to recharge the batteries, which in turn powers the wheels) so if you're not braking a lot, then you've got nothing to power the wheels with except gas.

Generally, Lexus is a great car. Hybrid cars are amazing, the best thing is that you have a car that you don't find a lot on the road. All the parts are similar to the RX350, so you won't have trouble getting spare parts for it. It is a bit fast, but I don't think that she will be able to handle it. Also, the RX overall is a great car for girls, its beautiful and classy. Go ahead with that car, or go with any other Lexus, they are all amazing.

The RX400h is only slightly more fuel efficient than the RX350, and has been tested and proven to be no more than a fraud.

How spoiled it your kid that she gets a Lexus as a teenager. Buy her a used car with a diesel. Its cheaper when she wrecks it.
