well im not a gurl but i have the poofiest thickest curliest hair ever so i normally just go to my stylist about once a month to get my hair thinned. you can tell them not to lose any length and it will be thinner than ever. they use these weird kind of scissors and maybe a little razor and it works really great. you can go as thin or as thick as you want just be open with your stylist and ask about how to keep your new hair in good conditions
good luuck and i hope this helps (:

Thinning the hair removes bulk but adds puffiness. Try a layered style that will reduce the amount of hair and the time it takes to create the look that you want. Also you need the tools that we use in the salon. If you don't use the products that control your hair and keep it in good condition that your stylist uses while your at the salon you will not be able to easily recreate the look that she sends you out of the salon with. A Chi iron or other quality ceramic iron will help also.

i have naturally thick, straight hair. so when i had it permed it was a big, pouffy mess. but fortunately, i have a good stylist that gave me a good hair cut, WITHOUT losing length. but to do this, she had to give me a textured style with lots of short pieces cut in--my hair was not "thinned" but shaped.
personally, i am willing to pay some $$$ for a good hair style. i wouldn't go to a regular stripmall haircut place. save up and go to a reputable salon. so i guess that's all i can suggest =\
(also, when you're at the salon, ask the stylist's opinion...it's in their best intrest to make you look great, so that you will come back to them and hopefully refer your friends to them too)

I have thick straight hair & my stylist tames it with strategically placed layers & thinning shears.
One of the earlier answers is correct - ask to have your hair thinned but not shortened.
Here's a link to photos of hair cuts organized by length for ideas: http://matrix.com/find_your_hair_style/
Print out one you like & bring it w/ you to the salon so your stylist can see exactly what you want.

To have your hair thinned you will need it thinned with a razor or thinning scissors.
I have found this very severe on the ends of the hair.
Quite often I have seen girls with split ends and very dry looking hair because of this process.
I don't think it is worth it although it is the trend to have your hair done this way.
I also speak from experience.

just to boost your self esteem
you will be thank for having thick wavy hair when you are older because many (or some) older people do not have thick wavy hair, they have thinning or loosing hair
I bet when you get older, your hair will be thicker than most peoples
be thankful for what you have

Buy some GHDS. (or CHI's if you're in the USA)
They really do make a hell of a difference.
Thinning it out does make it look thinner. But also can make the split ends worse and flyaway!............
Go to a salon and ask what they think..
They are professionals...

Don't thin it. I have thin hair and would love to have thick hair, but its your decision.
