Ads in local newspapers can be quite inexpensive. You could put up flyers in local supermarkets, churches, etc., and even see if you can put up a sign in local automotive/motorcycle dealerships, automotive parts stores, and other places where potential customers can see it. If you don't have a sign out in front of your house, you should think about putting one out there. And if you can join the local chamber of commerce, that's a good way to network potential customers.

First a web presence. At least get a portfolio up that your customers can link from business card. A phone number listed in yellow pages. Check rates for local newspaper advertising. Direct mailers. Magazines. Business cards get them on bulletin boards at grocery stores and any place that has bulletin board ( usually largest employers have alot of boards) Chamber of Commerce? Join and have a ribbon cutting or grand opening. Vehicle advertising. Promos with ever invoice you send out. TV and radio ads. Bus and bus stop ads. Ok there are others. These are options but you need to plan your advertising. budget. But personal I think you need to get business cards and get them in the hands of people who will help you grow your business. Are working from home? Then you can not have a ribbon cutting but a grand opening for your website could be way to get the Chamber of Commerce on board. Free press. Using home phone or cell? Getting the yellow pages, Think outside the box. Maybe hold a photography seminar and invite the press. A chance to show your stuff and just point out a few things but not give away any secerts. Free press and get people talk. Creating the a buzz similar to like an art showing. Can not afford local newspaper advertsing try college papers you get large employer, students and parents and advertsing rates are cheaper. More buzz for the buck. It is about creating a brand an image.

There is a huge national televised sports event with pay per view as well October 19, 20 and 21 in San Francisco California. Get some advertising space there, we just purchased some and it was less then $100. Nothing like getting your business seen on television

Sponsor an ad on 1800-free411. You could have your add played to callers requesting a number of a motor cycle shop in Houston, when they like your ad they can press a button and get connected to you. If the call is below 30 secs it probably isn't a new customer for you and you are not charged.

Hey you can even do a SwitchPitch - whenever someone calls to request your competitor's phone number, have your ad with your special played and catch their customers ;)

Maybe you can find some ideas in the links below. Regarding word of mouth, one idea is to hand out free samples of something to people who blog. Ask them to begin blogging about the product and generating "buzz."
