So many questions about religion are met with hostile answers and so many are asked to mock religion rather than to gather information. Why?

What purpose does it serve to attack or mock other people? And don't blame the Christians either, because the non-Christians are just as bad or worse.

And I'm sure that I'll get replies that Christians are always in your face, or trying to convert you. Rubbish. I see it constantly on here (and in the real world) from BOTH sides. And the arguement makes no sense anyway because if you want the Christians to leave you alone, why ask questions about Christianity?

Mingeeater, I don't know where you're from, but I don't participate in religion of any sort, and I certainly don't conform and no "religious group" as ever attempted to make my life hell.

Oseas, the very same could be said for athiests as well. Most know very little about evolutionary biology and even less about microbiology, yet they hold to evolution as fanatically as Jerry Fallwell.

Yours is the very sort of answer I was referring to, actually.

*** POINT OF ORDER ***

Let's not generalize excessively here. There are over 10,000 denominations of Christianity and billions of individual Christians. There really is no statement that you can make that applies to all of them.

ajj085: to be fair, athiests have their organizations as well. There have been several legal movements in the west attempting to squelch religion and they continue to this day. Some are attempts organized by religious zealots that have backfired, some are not.

As for the statement that Christians started it, I don't see how you can make that statement. If you are referring to Yahoo Answers or life in general, it is entirely without foundation.

People are often just mean & nasty on this site. They are rude and ill mannered. I like to call them "keyboard bullies." They hide behind this site to spout their obnoxious diatribes and then if you complain about it, they'll say, "its free speech. If you can't take the heat, get out. . . " I agree with you. Its not necessary to use this site to show that you have no home training.

The reason why so many religions fight is because the practioners are not really holy or learned individuals. For example many christians are not very educated in the history or theology of their faith, they are only church goers. The same is true within Islam, the majority of all Muslims were born into Islam and although they know little of its history they'll die to defend it's name. Religion is a bunch of crap and my opinion is that religion is for the weak minded individual. Half the world knows that there is a God,Creator or what ever one chose to call this entity, but man has put words in Gods mouth saying he said this or that he said that. Can we name any other people who said that the Jews are the choosen people of God besides themselves?
Religion was formed to control the people and I think it has done an excellent job! The next time you hear any one say a holy war took placed, ask them,"how can any war be holy.
Now if religous people were really holy than they wouldn't be fighting after all.

I'm a Christian, and I'll be the first to say other Christians push their beliefs on others so fast and so hard that it turns more people off than it converts. I mean, they will try to get into some debate with a non-believer who speaks and thinks logic and because they don't truly understand the religion enough will lose the debate. Well, now the person they were debating feels they just proved without a doubt that religion is wrong. And so now it is as easy to mock than it is to not say anything.

If you are ever trying to convince someone that religion is real, do not quote the Bible. Just a FYI to all those that might be in the situation in the near future.

yeah..i agree, mst ppl here r using questions as an excuse to mock other religion rather than actually wanting to learn about the religion..it actually doesn't matter who started it,be it christians, jews, muslims and etc..if the answerer is sincere enough and able to answer the question without being biase and having negative perspective about the questioner, that's fine..cause sooner or later the questioner will change..maybe..but what you said about the non-christians blaming the christians, that's not true..we all know that the christians aren't the only ones attacking..say,the christians attack islam, the jews may have done it too..and if some muslim attack the christians, the jews may have done it too..you see?

this site is not a microcosm of life, it is biased towards people who want to insult others. It's anonymous, and sound bite style answers.

Let's be real, Christians did start the "push your beliefs on others" thing. I honestly think that if christianity were different, there would be no official atheism, at least none that anyone would be passionate about. It's not rubbish at all. Do you see atheists knocking on people's doors asking to talk to them? Do you see them literally standing on soapboxes yelling at no one on college campuses? Do you see a "Moral Minority" or "Atheist Coalition" getting people politically active? Cuz christians do these things, obviously.

The idea is to leave non-believers alone legally, so we can have an interesting public philosophical discussion, clearly no one is on Yahoo Answers asking people questions while wanting no one to respond.

I am in complete agreement with you. Non Christians do not fully appreciate that taking a position directly opposite a given ideology puts them in the same mindset as those they wish to ridicule because their position is now fixed also.
They have become as fanatical in their hatred of religion that they are worst than the religious fanatics. It is better not to care at all and leave each to their own. After all the support for their god Darwin is diminishing daily as no fossil proof can be found to support his theory

The fighting is all about man's fundamental LACK OF UNDERSTANDING and TOLERANCE of other people.
We are ALL descendants of the teachings of ABRAHAM.
Jews, Christians, Muslims all have the same forefather!
The teachings have been altered over thousands of years and now we have this huge debate over WHO IS RIGHT!
The "ALMIGHTY" has many names. Allah, Jehovah, Jesus.
Instead of fighting over the differences,.....people need to see the similarities and work for peace, tolerance, and understanding. Unfortunately that would require humility and a certain humbleness that is in short supply today.

I will agree with that ... on another account i asked a very nice question to a specific belief system (i wont say which one). Just trying to understand and all. It was as respectful as possible! That was not meant to offend at all (in fact i said that) and i just got attacked over and over! It was not very nice at all. I was very dissapointed. I wish there would just be some peace in the world. God bless

People feel strongly about their beliefs.....otherwise they wouldn't believe...LOL. I think the types that get worked up though, probably get worked up over anything. It doesn't cost anything to be polite, but ranting could cost you a heart attack. I like that last question you asked. Baiting is a skilled art form on this site, it would seem.

Because religions are about control, they want to control everyones lives, if those people won't conform, then the religious groups make life hell for them.
