The Catholic Church and many Protestant churches don't view the LDS Church as a Christian denomination, therefore they don't view its baptisms as valid.
Mitt Romney has served as a missionary, Bishop and Stake President for the LDS Church so he is very committed to his religion.

Lets turn the question around and see what the answer to "Why doesn't the Mormon church recognize Catholic baptisms?" would be. The answer to that is illustrative.
The answer to the 1st question is the Mormon church is a cult. The Mormon church is at variance with the cardinal doctrines of the Historical Christian church.
I cant speak for the apparent indecisiveness of presidential candidates.

The Catholic Church accepts virtually all Christian baptisms. More than a million adults converted to Catholicism last year alone, and those who had been baptized in a Protestant denomination were not baptized in the Catholic Church. Christian baptism is Christian baptism. However, since Mormons are not Christian, and there beliefs have little in common with those of Christianity, Mormons (and also Jehovah's Witnesses) converting to Catholicism do receive Christian baptism.

For the same reason Salt Lake doesn't recognize catholic baptisms. Or anyone else's.
Mitt's got to be 'attractive' to a whole lot of people, including the religious right, so he's going to sooner or later compromise the profit and go for the votes.

Morons...er...Mormons are not Catholic, therefore Catholics won't accept that baptism.
My church will not accept another baptism either, because if you didn't know the truth when you got baptised, then you need to get it right the next time.

Mormons believe in three seperate gods....the trinity is seperated in total, God the father, the son, and the holy spirit are not the same as we see it. We believe in the Trinity, one God consisting of The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit
Therefore, when they baptise using the same words (in the name of the father, the son, and the holy spirit), it does not mean the same as what we say when we baptise (or any other Protestant denomination).

It might have something to do with the Mormon belief that some of their people will eventually become deified.

You'd have to ask the Vatican that question.
