I used Nicorette gum. Chewing the gum gives you your nicotine fix so you can break the "habit" of smoking. Once you've got that under control, all you have to do is start cutting back on the gum until you're off of it.
I tried several times in the past to quit but this really worked for me. I've been smoke free for 3 years now.

I must have tried about 30 times and one time, it just clicked. The time that worked I knew I was going to be in a car with 2 non smokers for 2 days, so I threw out my smokes before we started out on the drive. Take a lot of walks. Any time you think about smoking give yourself some MILD negative reinforcement like do 10 or 20 push ups or pinch yourself kinda hard to give your mind a negative association with thinking about about cigarettes. Love yourself, and tell yourself how much you love yourself. Avoid drinking, too, that lowers your resolve. You might want to start a health program just to set your mind on a new track. Good luck!

I got a little book from the American Cancer Society
Twenty One Days To Stop Smoking (Mass Market Paperback) (on Amazon for 1 cent plus shipping)
It was very helpful. The 2 things in it that helped me the most were: 1. Write down you reason for quitting and refer to it whenever you want to smoke. (mine was the money). The other was cinnamon sticks (the kind you put in hot apple cider). I chewed on them while driving and while on the computer, which were the 2 hardest times for me.
Finally,
www.quitnet.net
was great, I could get help and ask questions and it gave me something to do. Here are my quitnet stats...
2329 days, 48 minutes and 32 seconds smoke free.
46581 cigarettes not smoked.
$9,316.00 and 11 months, 25 days, 19 hours of your life saved.
Your quit date: 1/3/2001

I had quit/started up smoking repeatedly. 2 and a half years ago, my spouse said he really wanted me to quit. His worrying about my health made me quit, but it only worked because I WANTED to quit. I quit cold turkey. Also, about a year and a half ago, my husband and I watched his grandma die from lung cancer. That sealed the deal for me.
It really only works if you WANT to quit. There are so many products out there to help with nicotine withdrawals such as Commit Lozenges, the Nicorette gums, or nicotine patches.
You can also visit http://www.anti-smoking.org/quitting.htm

I have just moved back to the U.S from Italia, and over there I smoked Marlboro Reds like there was no tomorrow, but reluctantly on the plane ride here i went thru maybe two boxes of Nicorette gum to calm my nicotine craving so I wouldn't flip out, but its been like 5 days and all i do is just chew whatever gum I find around, its good stuff.

I had to quit while I was pregnant, which for me made it easier. After the baby was born, I decided I could leave smoking behind and focus on creating a healthy environment for my daughter. The key is finding something you feel is worth quitting for.

Cold turkey. It took a couple tries, but it's the only thing that worked.

You have to truly want to, and when you do...than you will find your own way, weather it is cold turkey, prescription medicine, or hypnosis.
