A cicada is an insect of the order Hemiptera, suborder Auchenorrhyncha, in the superfamily Cicadoidea.
The small eyes are wide apart on the head and usually transparent, well-veined wings.
There are approximately 2,500 species of cicada around the globe, and many remain unclassified.
Cicadas live in temperate to tropical climates where they are one of the most widely recognized of all insects, mainly due to their large size and remarkable (and often inescapable) acoustic talents ( make loud noise).
Cicadas are sometimes called "locusts", although they are unrelated to true locusts, which are a kind of grasshopper. Cicadas are related to leafhoppers and spittlebugs.
Cicadas do not bite or sting, are benign ( Harmless ) to humans, and are not considered a pest.
Many people around the world regularly complement their standard diet with cicadas: the female is prized for eating as it is meatier.
Cicadas have been eaten (or are still eaten) in Ancient Greece, China, Malaya, Burma, Australia, North and South America and the Congo.
Cicada are employed in the traditional medicines of China and Japan for hearing-related matters, poignant considering that they are known for the mating song the males of the species make.
The word cicada is a direct derivation of the Latin cicada.

They are flying bugs that come out of the ground every 17 years. As kids we loved them and after they hatch they are beautiful and can make such a din they hurt your ears. The shell is left hanging on the tree and you can pick it up whole. We used to wear the shells on our clothing and frighten the other kids. They are very interesting creatures.

It's a bug, related to the grasshoppers and locusts. However, it has an extended egg-hatching time in the ground, and a shorter existance when it hatches.
