How about a Balinese theme? Its cozy, relaxing, and can be very aesthetically pleasing and calming to both children and adults alike.
Make sections of floor like the sides of curved pathways in pebblewash, have some nice big indoor plants in corners, nice mood lighting without it being too dark (standing lamps, table lamps on side tables). Ceiling lights can use spots with dimmer switches so you can control the brightness accordingly. Also, a nice wallpaper or paint in an earth tone colour. Have your furniture in carved teak including your reception counter if possible or at the very least, in a nice wood that shows off the grain. Waiting area seating furniture should be comfortable in maybe linen cushions of a light tan colour (not so obvious if stained) but make sure the covers are removable for washing. A nice feature would be to have a peaceful indoor balinese style fountain.. i'm thinking something small and simple which emits the sound of trickling water without making a wet splash. An effective one can be either prefab statuetes (http://www.balifurnish.com/stone-water-feature-manufacturer-company-bali-indonesia.html) or a simple waterfall made of stone or glass set in a pyramid-like structure.

When I was little I loved "Story/Fairy Tale" Wall paper. There are so many little things going on in it. People talking up there....someone farming over here...guy fighting a dragon, a dog chasing a cat...Where's Waldo books are a good example of this.
Also Magnetic walls and magnets. You can get all sorts of magnetic things and stick them on the wall and the children can move them around and play with them however they want.
Mostly get lots of visually intersting things. Things that move with bright colors: Lava lamps, oil and water gadets, plasma balls, those neon stripped fish. Make these up high so they can be pointed out but not touched if they're hot or very breakable.

something relaxing and happy i think. maybe creamy yellows or a night sky with stars. something that won't be threatening and will let their minds wander. i wouldn't make it to busy. stuff like that gets on my nerves and characters go out of style to fast. what kind of feeling do you wish to convey? safety, happiness, comfort? whatever would make you feel that way would probably do the same for your patients.
