I know exactly what your are exeriencing and it's extremely miserable. Your psychiatrist will be the best judge for the right type of medicine. You may have to take a medication to help this chemical imbalance, just as a diabetic must take insulin. Makes sre you give your doctor complete details of what you experience, when it happens, etc. Leave nothing out so they are able to properly diagnose you. The great news is there is medication that eliminates these attacks. You may start and feel fine or the medication might not help at all. Everyones body is different and reacts differenty to meds. SO what is wonderful for one peron, may not help another. You must report any and all concerns to your doctor. If you notice a problem and keep an open dialogue then the medication is adjusted correctly for you. You will become a new person and the relief is overwhelming! I hope you get to experience the relief right away, as I know first hand how lonely and scary these attacks are. You are very smart recognizing this and seeking treatment. Best of luck to you.

Yes, tell a doctor what to do any time you think he's on the wrong track. It's your body, not his. In this case, tell him what's going on with you, what's happening, etc. I'm not exactly sure why it is that you are having separation anxiety from your brother. Has he left to live somewhere else? You might want to talk to your mom about seeing a therapist if you are having that many panic attacks. 2-3 panic attacks a day is really a lot and getting on anti-anxiety meds can be addicting. A family doctor is really not the one to be prescribing this for you for any length of time.
Going back to the "telling a doctor what to do". Although you are only 14 now, keep in mind as you get older that it is good to stay well informed. Check things out for yourself. Asking questions like this is good. Telling the doctor that you have read up on certain meds and their side effects, etc and are not interested in taking some that you have heard are bad for you is also good. Being aware of what the doctor is talking about and being able to know when you should get a second opinion is also good.
Keep asking questions!!

A really true panic can actually make you pass out. Remember there is a big difference between accute anxiety, and panic. If you read upon xanax you will find that it is for use between six & eight weeks. Depending on what you say to him he will probably start you out on xanax 1/4mg. It may be for only once a day of three times per day. But to make a long story short I was on xanax starting at 1/4mg, and grudauated upward to 0.5, then 1mg, then 2mg, and then take as needed. This went on for six years. At the end I was taking 6MG per-day which is a killer. Along with that this quack gave me Seroquel, Gabitriel, Lexapro, Zyprexal, Atenalol, and some I can't think of. Anyway my children came and got me one Sunday and I took a ride with them. I did not know at the time it was to the ER. But the DR. in the ER said I was near death. I had so many prescribed drugs in my system that they could not give me anything except a drug to keep me out of seizures. I was in "withdrawals" for five months. I do not remember the years from 2001-2004. No memories of those years whatsoever. In fact do not remember even quitting my job as a Lab technician.
Now for xanax. My drug Dr. told me in the hospital that the xanax alone is for short term use, just to help you cope with a bad situation that you have encountered, like a funeral, divorce, or something like that.
He then went on to say the 1MG of xanax is equal to 1/5 of liguor. In other words it has the same affect on the body as whiskey, or any alcohol does. I was taking 6mg, plus the other psychotic meds. He told my family that I would have died within a week if they had not brought me in.
Lawsuit still pending from the drugs that I was consuming without follow-up...

I have really bad anxiety and for awhile was having, like you, 2-3 panics attacks per day.
I have Zanax that I keep with me every where I go. Whenever I am feeling anxious I take a pill and it calms me waaay down. You can also take anti-depressant pills on a daily basis to help with anxiety.
I would suggest that you write down all the reasons why you think you're anxious and let your doctor know what happens during your panic attack.
Your doctor should help you pick out what medicine is going to be best for you.
Best of luck to you!!

Hi there, I just laugh about my past 3 years of panic now. I was not able to go anywhere without carrying xanax. Fear of having another attack was the most important subject of my days. When i first found joe barry's web site i started to cry because of my happiness.

I'd expect to be placed on an anti-depressant.
Anti-anxiety medication seems to be what you're looking for but I doubt you'll be prescribed that. You're asking what you can say to persuade the doctor which is classic "drug seeking behavior."
If you have something that requires treatment, you'll get some therapy and anti-depressants. I think you really just need some counseling to help you learn coping skills. We all need that from time to time.

The best panic attack medicine is to realize that it is not going to kill you and is merely adrenaline. Ride it out, and try to separate yourself from other people to ride it out, and develop a mental adverse thinking to it. It takes time and practice. A panic attack feeds on your fear of it like a demon, so don't fear it, and it will go away quicker when you face it.

Never, but NEVER try to tell the doctor how to treat you! Describe how you're feeling and try to tell him or her when these incidents occur and let the doctor decide on the appropriate therapeutic modality.
