i have 2 cats and 4 rats and i have had no problem with my cats trying to get my rats. they have to learn they are not there for play, if you need to get a water bottle and every time your cats get up to see the rats squirt them and they will under stand after a few times. It is not mean and wont hurt them.

Cats are a lot more independent than rats and could really care less about you other than when you feed them (there's always an exception though. Some cats are really affectionate). However, rats on the other hand are like tiny little dogs. Some even give you kisses and the right rat can learn tricks even faster than a dog (usually the very outgoing, personable, playful rat personality picks up tricks the best. Penny, a Medium PetCo feeder rat I rescued could really learn tricks fast. I taught her her name, how to spin a hamster wheel from the outside with her paws, to go hide in a little hut, to stand on top of it, and more. She was way more consistent than my dog, a boston terrier. They love attention from their people (always keep them in pairs though. They are very personable animals and if you can't be with it 90% of the time they need a friend. Two females are a great choice). They are really, really fun pets. I absoloutly love them. Just clean their cage once a week, give them good food and water and attention and they are the ideal pet. P.S. I've only been bitten by any of my rats once, and that was when Penny had megacolon disease the day before she passed away. It's suprisingly hard to find a rat that's so fearful it bites you. most of the people who are saying cats don't really know about rats as pets. Pet rats don't carry rabies or other diseases like their wild cousins. Rats have been domesticated for over a century they will not give you any diseases.

I have cats and rats. Most of my cats couldn't care less about the rats. Some cats are interested, but my rats live in a Martin's cage, which is EXTREMELY safe, so I don't worry about it. The rats get all huffy and try to grab the cat's fur, but no one is really upset. When the rats are out playing, there is ALWAYS a closed door between them and the cats. I would never, ever let them 'play' together -- but there's no harm in having both cats and rats!

While it depends on the cat (mine could care less, rat no rat put the friskies down and move along), it would be highly unlikely your cat would continuously go after them. They have better stuff to do, sleep....breath...tear up the couch. The key is when you have the rats out, make sure the rats are elsewhere. I suspect the worse thing that will happen in the cat sleeps on top of the cage.

Depends on your cats. I had 2 cats and they never bothered my rat, I think the cats thought the rat was creepy. They stayed away from it when it was out of the cage.

keep the rats in a room away from the cats and don't let the cats get to them. if you really want the rats get them just don't let the cats get to them. sorry about repeating but again don't let the cats get to the rats!!!

your cats will try to get them, just keeped them locked up in the cage, or keep the door to that room closed and it should be fine. even if the cats do notice, they can't get to the rats if the door's closed.

i have a cat that constantly brings home dead wild rats and he doesn't bother with my pet rats. it will depend on your cats themselves.
