If you're looking for an easy quick answer to magical practice by asking this, you won't get it. The secret to effective magic is finding the system that works best for you. You know why there are so many types of magic? Because there are so many magicians! Magic isn't a one size fits all thing, and those books of prefabricated spells and rituals aren't going to work for everyone.
Therefore, my answer to your question is: the most effective magic has been that which I have created based on the individual interactions with spirits and deities that I have good relationships with, and using the symbols that make the most sense to me.

Actually, positive visualization and affirmation have proved to be more effective for me than magic out of books. And the most effective rituals I've used, either for devotion or magic, are ones I've written myself.
A book I've been reading about quantum physics and magic has really had a more profound effect on my understanding of how magic works than any straight magic book and I recommend it highly:

there are a number of very useful books out there, but if i had to pick just one, i'd probably pick _Cause Principle and Unity and Essays on Magic_ by Giordano Bruno. others of value would include _Condensed Chaos_ and _Prime Chaos_ by Phil Hine, _Quantum Psychology_ by Robert Anton Wilson, _Mindworks_ by Anné Linden, _Turtles All the Way Down_ by DeLozier and Grinder, and the seven volumes of _The Invisibles_ graphic novel series (no, that's not a joke), among others.

Here is an interesting ability I discovered on accident.
Using magick, I can make my girlfriend climax whenever I will her to. I discovered it on accident, but am able to reproduce the result consistently, though with much greater ease if she is already aroused. This, of course, is accomplished without physical contact, though I haven't tried doing it from another room.

Book 4 (complete with Parts I, II, and III) by Aleister Crowley. Don't take it lightly, and don't use it if you're a beginner or just "dabbling" in magick.
