ok heres the story. 73 Dodge Challenger in resto,318 with a mild cam, this winter I replaced the gas tank, installed new cam, timing chain and lifters. It starts and runs fine. When I go about a mile down the road it just quits. It did this 2 times today and I had to get it jumped then it ran fine for a bit and quit again. Last week I installed a new radio and left the ignition on for about 2 hours. Did I maybe cook the coil or ballast resistor? Is the coil breaking down when hot or could it be the fuel system. It has a new Edelbrock 650 on it and a new matching aluminum intake also. Thanks for any ideas. Im gonna check the ignition system tomorrow.

Remove your ballast resistor and check for cracks in the back also make sure it is the right resistor.Check the airgap for the electronic ignition.Check for cracked wires and loose connections.I once had the autoparts store give me the wrong resistor it made my car run like it had a rev limiter on it at about 5000 grand it would scatter.

When it quits, does it sputter for a while first?...could be a bad fuel pump, float level in carb is not set to the proper height or sticking... or clogged lines/filter. Leaving the ignition on should not cook a coil or ballast but the coil might be going bad from heat. I wouldn't think it would start right away though. How about the battery/alternator? If the alternator is not putting out enough volts(14.5), the battery will get depleted trying to keep the car running and will die fairly soon....check the charge and load test the battery and output of the alternator.

I know that you couldn't leave yer key on for extended time
back in the "good old days" without possibly hurting yer ignition system. Sounds like you have a pretty good idea on where to start. The next step, after ignition, would be to make sure yer fuel system is up to par...Ya might hafta do some adjusting on yer carb. (float level). Good luck..and Mopars RULE !!
P.S.--ya might wanna check the points and condenser !!

If it runs a bit and dies then needs jumped, you battery is goin dead because your alternator isn't charging. So it sounds from your info anyway. So unless you cranked the battery dead and have another issue, check the alt.
