From what I understand, the large quantity of cicadas are going to emerge in the midwest--the news topic on the yahoo home page indicates this anyway. I'm guessing you probably don't need to worry too much about that "swarm"--though I am not sure when/if a swarm will hit Pennsylvania. :)

I am looking at a picture of one in Princeton , N.J. and it is dated 2004. I would make a best guess of every 15 to 17 years. The news is saying this summer. That would fit in this three year span with a 15 to 17 year return.

I vividly remember the last one.. it was funny to me. I had a little toy poodle who was hyped up running all over the yard trying to eat the cicadas.. She hated their buzzing.. Also as a kid, I remember when the cicadas crawled out of their holes, my brothers used to collect them to put them in our hair.. .. Also we would collect them in a jar to watch in their transformation from beetle stage to flying stage.. .. the birds, cats, dogs, and chickens in our area were on 7th heaven.. Fat pigeons also.. haha
