A new housemate is in. He is Muslim and not very talkative, is there anything I should know about the use of pans, cutlery, etc.?

I do not mean that we have to eat WITH him. just we do not want to offend or cause unnecessary harassment for using common utensils and pans. Can we fry bacon and then can he use the same frying pan?

I know that they don't eat pork, and that you're not supposed to eat with your left hand.

A Muslim shouldn't eat pork or any pork products for example bacon, some cooking fats,if you were sharing with a vegetarian they don't it meat simple as that.
Just ask your housemate ,its no big deal, they would be appreciative.
I'm not Muslim ,but I'm also not as narrow minded as some of these answers, they do believe in Jesus,Allah is just an Arabic name for God ,they have the same God as the Jewish ,Christians.
Don't be so Critical and judgmental or better still don't be so afraid.

And now to answer your question, just as some other people of whatever religion, are either more relaxed or more strict in their beliefs,I would presume a Muslim be no different ,I know some who drink some who don't etc,so unless you ask you wouldn't know..All the best..

I don't know about the use of pans, cutlery, but I do know about Pork and Pork products...and Kosher Meats. That is an absolute. They don't touch pork or pork products and they only eat Kosher Meats, that is meats with the blood drained out of them.

I must say it makes a refreshing change that someone of this website is being thoughtful.

Please use separate utensils for cooking pork etc and try to keep alcohol in a certain section of the kitchen.

It sounds like that you are a considerate person, so he may not know how to take being in a strange environment. Please give him time.

May God reward you and thank you for kind thoughts.

Be respectful but do not change how you do things! You can be accommodating but it goes both ways. Talk to him and if he doesn't want to share pans in which you cook pork, then suggests that he buys himself cooking equipment. His religion, his choice!

Your best bet is to talk to your roommate, and ask him if he observes some sort of kosher dietary practices. If you tell him you are just trying to be accomodating, he may open up a little bit.

Failing in that, try an internet search on "Muslim kosher diet" or "Muslim cultural practices". Good luck!

Just ask him in a nice way and talk to him. If he is religious then he will mind what you eat if hes not then don't think he will give a damm what you eat, just like me lol.

anything that has pork or pork ingredients please don't serve to him or offer him..also alcohol is forbidden so anything with alcohol, even vinegar shouldn't be offered to him...as for utensils and pans, cutlery...it's fine, just as long as they are washed if he wants to use them...

Try asking him about it. If you're not sure about doing that, tell him that you don't know much about his religion and would like to know more. That way that stuff comes out anyway.
