I have an 88 ford f150 and the manual transmission has gone bad it is a 4x4 and i want to know how to change it to a 2wd truck. Can i just buy a 2wd tranny and drop the transfercase and get a new longer yolk (drive shaft)?

Yes, change the tranny to a 2wd and remove the front shaft and have to find a 2wd rear driveshaft, and may have to replace the crossmember with a 2wd, I have converted 2 to 4 wheel and had to change the crossmember and some models.

I gotta agree with Jen,
You have to replace the tranny. get the original and don't need to do the rest of the mods. The cost is not the issue as the extra you may have to put into the 4X tranny will be cash you don't spend on the driveshaft

the tranny isn't 4x4 or 2x4. why don't you just get a new tranny and call it good? what is the point in doing all that extra work to make your truck worth less?

if you think it has someting to do with you 4wd it is probally your transfer case if it will move in 4 low or 4 high but not 2 high it is transfer case just go to wrecking yard and get one it is a bad idea to change it to a 2 digger they a worth a lot less plus old trucks need to be 4 diggers to beat up.

You will need another transmission and a driveshaft. you can leave the front axle gears in just remove the front driveshaft.
