I am not from California. Try the Methodist churches, and also the local shelters. The local shelters, and the local family services waiting rooms often list the places which give free food (known as food pantrys) here to take home and prepare and eat at home. They keep lists, and the number of people in the household, and will give food according to the people living together. Also, they can arrange for you to pick up food at other locations, should you run low. Getting the food home is another thing.

Most churches will help you out. Go during office hours, explain your need, and they'll probably take you to a grocery store to go shopping, or may even have a food pantry to fill you a few bags on the spot. Sorry, I don't have any links.

I would call the local food bank or the local crisis center and ask.
