find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

I would cross-train...run or bike or swim for 30-45 minutes to an hour at least 5 days a week and incorporate strength training at least 3 days a week (bi's and back one day, tri's and chest another, legs and shoulders another). On the days you strength train, don't do more than 30 minutes cardio. Eat 3 balanced meals (veggies w/protein and fat as cheese or dressing or avacado/cottage cheese) and have 2 smart snacks (apple w/peanut butter or yogurt w/granola). You'll see results within 30 days!!!

I would start with running outside. If you're not in shape for that, start with biking. Go for long distance at a slow pace to tone your muscles.

After working out for about 20 minutes at one's target heart rate (http://exercise.about.com/cs/fitnesstools/l/bl_THR.htm), the body begins burning fat. So, long cardiovascular exercise is probably best.

Sit-ups, leg lifts, light weight-lifting, and swimming are all good to tone your body. Swimming is a good way to work off pounds without noticing you are doing much work.

Good luck.
