I use soy milk.
Sometimes I use water, then mix in a little yogurt.

Try BSN protein products from GNC.com. I'm doing cell mass strawberry and 200 grams of whey protein a day. The stuff taste great and you show pretty quick as well, just hit the steel daily.
You can use rice or soy milk as a mixer. It could also be the product just doesnt taste very good to begin with.

I often make mine with fruit and juice -- banana and orange juice, or any type of juice that you like. Protein and carbs for energy. Trainers at the gym tell me that the protein is absorbed more quickly if a carb is involved (it supposedly spikes the insulin), whereas dairy products can slow the absorption of the protein. So "they" say! But I also sometimes add a bit of non-fat yogurt (plain or fruit) to the mix when I am using fruit and juice.

milk is good, but throwing some fruit in the blender tends to make the drink more palatable. Bananas, fresh strawberries, etc... yogurts can also be a nice addition.

Milk may give you an upsetting effect on the tummy.
Drink lots of water.
Do not put hot water in your shake.
