Correct no passport until Jan 1, 2008 for LAND travel (driving) into or out of Canada from the USA--HOWEVER, you MUST have one if you are FLYING into or out of Canada. But if you are driving you will need your Driver's license AND your birth certificate if you want to get into Canada... if you don't have a driver's licence then you better have a passport and the birth certificate... I FLEW to Canada a few years back and didn't have a passport and couldn't FIND my license (women's pocketbooks are sometimes easy to lose things in)... I DID get in using my photo id badge from WORK and my birth certificate---id badge HAS my picture but because it was issued by the GOVERNMENT, I guess that's why I was allowed to use it as ID... however it I DID have to stay back and wait to get clearance from someone higher up the food chain of a border patrol guard... not a fun way to go to Canada---

If you are from the US, and you go to Canada, your drivers license will be good enough ID. Use to be the same for Canadians entering the US.
But now with the upped security in the US, you have to have a passport to get into the US. Your drivers ID is not valid even though it is from the US. Blame Bush.

no longer in case you an American citizen (regardless of the undeniable fact that because of the fact the different answerers reported, that's changing quickly.) To come again into the States, you are going to be asked for information of citizenship. in case you're no longer donning a passport, you would be wanting a duplicate of your American start certificates. And valid photograph identity.

Yes, thanks to a new bill passed in the past few months, you absolutely need a passport to enter or leave Canada, as well as Mexico. Yahoo! News had an article about it a while back.
