It's pretty hard for a puppy. Try keeping him up later at night. More exercise in general would help a lot.

How old is this puppy?? You train him by not responding to his cries. Any type of response ( yelling "Go back to sleep", rolling over, turning on a light) is attention and that is what he is looking for. He then quickly learns that this is what he needs to do to get attention. Where is crate located? Can you put him in a room without windows or close blinds/curtains?
Also, is he tired out at night before you crate him?? If not, he's getting up earlier because he has energy to burn. Play with him the night before for at least 30 minutes. By playing, I mean keep him moving for a solid 30 minutes. Don't give him a chance to take a break! Once playtime is over, he goes out for a potty break and then in the crate for the night. It's important for everyone to keep the SAME schedule for the puppy (meal times, potty times, training words)
Good luck!

What time does the poor thing go to bed????
How do you know that he doesn't have to go out??? A dog shouldn't have to hold its self no more than 8 hours!!!
Try taking the dog out when it does wake up and then see if it will go back to sleep. Maybe you feed the dog in your room and when it is done it might go back to sleep.
When we first got out puppy at 6 1/2 weeks old I was having to get up 2-3 times a night. Now she will sleep from 9:30 till 5:00 or 5:30 and I think I am lucky!! Sometimes after I take her out and she eats her breakfast she will go back to sleep!!
I never get to sleep in during the week or the weekend!!!
Good Luck!!

I have a sheet over my puppies cage which keeps it dark longer in the mornings. I cover him last thing before I go to bed and then uncover him when I get up. He is only 8 weeks old and it works good. I had the same problem. I found keeping him awake longer at night helps as well. If you havent already put some toys or a some sort of bone or something to keep him busy.

If you wanted the pup you should have thought of all the responsibility that goes along with owning the pup as in getting YOURSELF OUT OF BED AT 5:00 AM TO LET IT OUT TO POTTY! And just how do you know it is not hungry, thirsty or has to potty if you don't get out of bed to see what is needs Hmmmmm?
There is a lot of responsibility of owning a pup or an adult dog for that matter.
