The BARE MINIMUM is 1 year old AND 20 lbs. Rearfacing is much safer and the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) actually recommends rearfacing to the weight limit of the seat. Most convertible seats RF to 30, 33, or 35 lbs. My 3.5 year old is still RF'ing at 31 lbs! :)

whats the point of turning him if the baby never finds a difference? It's safer facing the rear but the standard requirements in the US is 1 year old and 20 pounds weight.

you have to be about a year old......... or 21 pounds.....
some babies are large and reach 21 pounds well before age one.......
in this case you dont want to turn them around yet
same thing with age..just cause you are one BUT NOT yet 21 pounds you shoulld still have the child rear facing ...only when the two factors meet you can then turn the child front facing
.

They need to be at least 20 lbs and 1 year old. If they hit 20 lbs but aren't 1, don't turn them. Bottom line is that it is much safer for a child to be rear facing so don't rush it.

Every state has different guidelines, but the rule of thumb is at least 1 yr of age and 20lbs. However, they say the longer you can keep your child rear-facing the safer it is if you were in an accident. Make sure to check with your local police department for your state's guideline.

since babies grow at different rates, wait until your baby is too long for the infant car seat, usually around 12mos, but if you had a premmie baby, it may take a bit more time for baby to grow passed the edge of the seat.
