I wish you finished this question. But it sounds to me like you EXPECTED people in other countries to speak English and that's just ignorant. You're the reason more people oversees don't like Americans.
Most Americans go to other foreign speaking countries and don't understand why when they don't even ATTEMPT to try the local language, they may get nasty looks. Anyone traveling to another country should at least try to learn the basics; hello, thank you, "Excuse me, but do you speak English?" Most people will respond nicely if they at least see you've tried. Just like here in America, we expect people to speak our local language.

Perhaps you should concern yourself less with worldly matters and more on your spelling!

in Portugal everyone speaks English. same in Holland and maybe Germany. However you'll find Spain, France, Italy and Greece are a bit resistant. that's the real world. shame you had to take a cruise to realise it! they always speak English in films dont they? its not true my friend. or maybe u didn't tip and they were just being stubborn

Yes most countries usually speak their native language.

The English language doesn't prevail in all countries yet unfortunately.
