I am an atheist who occasionally has to attend a church function, as many atheists do at some point. It never fails that I cry. Why is that?

spiritual settings and moral convictions often stir emotions

I've cried when it seemed like there was no reason to cry. It's possible that I was so depressed and being in my parent's church just felt "right" at that time. I've since stopped going to a Church and find my spiritual times in different places now.

I think just being in a place that is spiritual puts you in touch with your spiritual part of yourself even if you are an atheist and when we are that close in tune with The Divine it evokes an emotional response. That response for you was tears.

For me, there is sometimes something so moving going on that it brings tears to my eyes. Usually it is something I would see as universal. This morning, for instance, there was a little girl at our church making her First Communion. I don't know her or her family, but seeing her all dressed up and still acting like a typical 8-year-old was the most endearing thing of all. The idea that this girl was going through a rite of passage of sorts and that she is still so young and innocent and whatnot brought tears to my eyes. I have to admit that it wasn't as much about faith as seeing that child "grow up."

So for you, maybe there is something going on - an action, a bit of text, some music - that touches what you believe to be true and causes the tears. I dunno, just a thought.

I cry a lot too. Out of the happiness that i feel, out of the relief that i get because i feel something lifting off my shoulders and sometimes just because everything is so beautiful. Dam i sound like a girl though! Lol - it is a very calming atmosphere that is heavy with gods love. Its kind of hard not to get a bit emotional. He loves you even if you dont love him - hell even if you dont believe in him!

Sorry for going all "christain" on you. Its just what i believe. Hope it helped

Depends on what made you cry. Were you attending a funeral, a wedding, a baptism?

I usually cry when I am filled up at how awesome God is. When He touches my soul.

Just because you are an atheist, doesn't mean you are not a nice person.

Somethings just really move you. If I was a crier, I woudlve cried today because this older guy got up and did one of the greatest special music pieces Ive ever heard. It had been a special occasion because this was the last sunday with our current minister so emotions were already running high.

Your spirit is grieving because you want to believe in your heart, but your mind is held captive by 10 million lies. You sense the Holy Spirit of God, but don't know how to reach Him.
Jesus said it was harder for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God than for a camel to go through the eye of a needle. Some are rich in physical wealth, others in pride, natural talents, beauty, etc. You know where your wealth lies.
He added "with men this is impossible, but not with God, for with God all things are possible."

Yes. Holy spirit makes me cry sometimes becasue I recognise how bad I am compered to Jesus, and also out of thankfullness. But why you should cry is a mystery, if you cry with no feeling then you could be allergic to Christians : ), or that God is trying to communicate with you in some wonderfully wierd and wacky way,,,, like he does.

Most of the time it is during a praise song, some times it is during a service. I'm not sure why, It s a spiritual thing. The same reason we can't explain God, until you been there.

i cried today as a matter of fact. Sometimes, something just touches your very soul----in a way that nothing but tears can express. Sometimes this is sadness, sometimes joy, sometimes we might not even realize.

Maybe your more agnositic than atheist?

actually - I cried in church today

I had a very rough week, and after 3 weeks of not being able to praise through song due to laryngitis, I was able to sing today..... AND I was privileged to announce to our congregation that our daughter is about to participate in her third mission trip (in Honduras - she's 15)... yes I cried.

Emotions overwhelm us at times. It's what makes us special.... I'm glad you have these experiences Red. :)

blessings and ((((hugs)))) :)
