Everybody's got a polymer pistol out these days.

Your main concern with the P40 is going to be availability of spare magazines and parts.

A quick check of a few sites reveals that magazines for this gun are hard to find. That may change in the future, but it's enough to prevent me from becoming an early adopter.

I guess they're okay, for a plastic gun, but you could do worse. Ever try beating someone with a plastic gun? Don't work. I suggest a Sig 220 or 226. Same features, but it's made out of STEEL. The 220 isn't available in .40 at this time, as far as I know, but I believe the 226 is. Sigs are known for their reliability, and have been around a lot longer than your plastic wondergun. They also come with tritium night sights, which are a huge help in low light situations, and the accessories for the Sig are easier to get than the ones for the FNP-40.

Another thing to consider: How many people do you know of that have a lot of experience working on the FNP-40? Not many, I'd bet. You can find someone experienced in working on Sigs in just about any gunshop.

I trust my Sig with my life, and the lives of my loved ones.

(hear that, Sigarms? Send me a t-shirt!)

This depends on the job . do you have to walk a lot ? Obviously you should be expecting to have to use your sidearm in some kind of confrontation .Choose something you are comfortable with and can shoot accurately go to the nee rest indoor shooting range and test out what they have available to rent try as many as you can . In as many different calibers are available . this is cheaper than just purchasing blindly. remember you will be trusting your life and likely the lives of others to this side arm so get all the training you can afford. P.S think to hell and back reliability.

For the price your going to pay for that, I'd consider a Glock .40 or a Beretta PX4 Storm .40

Sounds reasonable if you have to lug it around all day every day at work, and if you're working nights, the tritium sights would be nice. Personally, I'm happy I don't have to keep one on me all the time. I much prefer wheelguns of slightly larger caliber, but I'd go with a forty if my job were of that sort.
