Abraham Lincoln
That I am not a member of any Christian Church, is true; but I have never denied the truth of the Scriptures; and I have never spoken with intentional disrespect of religion in general, or of any denomination of Christians in particular.

Lincoln also said in his later years:

My earlier views of the unsoundness of the Christian scheme of salvation and the human origin of the scriptures, have become clearer and stronger with advancing years and I see no reason for thinking I shall ever change them.

Abraham Lincoln...

hmm

I think that he was a Christian...he just did not belong to a church. He had a personal relationship with Christ...going to church does NOT make or break a person as a Christian. Many Christians do NOT belong to a church. He most likely did not want to be criticized by the voting public, so he kept his beliefs secretive.

That is my personal analyzation of that quote and I hope this makes sense to you!

God Bless! =)

It sounds like he had a personal disdain for organized religion. Saw the value of some of the principles in scripture, but was not necessarily a Christian.

I guess that I would want to know the source of the document quoted, and then form a judgement on what was written. The reporter of the statement would also be scrutinized. After that, I would make further judgements.

That's precluding the condition that I cared in the first place what Abraham Lincoln or any other American President thought about Jesus, the Bible, etc. Which I truly don't.

It sounds like Lincoln wasn't a christian himself, but recognized that valuable ideas and teachings can be found in scripture and had no personal problems with anyone of any religion.

Makes sense, considering that Lincoln has always been portrayed by history as being a pretty rational guy.

Lincoln was a deist. I wish more people would look at religion the way he did. He wasn't religious but he did believe in god, that's all. Most of the founding fathers were Deists, and not christian like so many want us to believe.

Interesting fellow, old Abe, foresaw his own death in a dream, saw his casket in state, and yet it didn't really phase him. An idealist, perhaps, but we could all do with taking a leaf out of his book...

Politicians lie. Lincoln repeatedly told the voters he would do everything to preserve peace. Even back then, most people didn't believe him. Today when we look back at it, he lied. He lied about his religious belief too.
